Consequently, the lower oesophagal sphincter (LES) in your child’s digestive system becomes weak and tends to relax abnormally. This can cause your kid’s stomach contents to be pushed back into the oesophagus, leading to acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux (GER).
While a dietary change can seem like a good idea, it may not always work as there are more things at play than just the diet itself. On the other hand, acid reflux medications have been proven to be harsh and damaging to internal organs. In such a situation, natural remedies are a better treatment option as they’re more effective and gentler in the long run.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Although ACV is known to be acidic in nature, you just can’t ignore its multiple health benefits. Truth is that acid reflux is mainly caused because of a low amount of stomach acids. Using an antacid can reduce the potency of stomach acids and result in improper digestion. To combat acid reflux in your child, it’s important that you restore the pH balance in your kid’s stomach. For this reason, mix a teaspoon of ACV in a glass of warm water and give it to your child every morning.
As a natural anti-inflammatory agent, coconut oil reduces inflammation that happens because of acid reflux. In addition, coconut oil aids digestion and helps maintain the hormonal balance of your kid. If your infant or toddler is suffering from acid reflux, simply swab his or her mouth with coconut oil at least 3-4 times every day. For young children, just mix a teaspoon of the oil in any warm drink or even in the food they eat.
While this remedy isn’t really a good idea for infants as they can end up swallowing it, it works perfectly well for children aged 4 years or more. All you need to do is give your child some sugarless gum to chew on. Besides keeping your child’s teeth healthy and free of cavities, it stimulates the flow of saliva, thereby helping to neutralize stomach acids.
Yoghurt is a brilliant and yummy way to keep acid reflux at bay in your child. As an alkaline food, yoghurt soothes your child’s oesophagus while increasing his or her body’s ability to absorb protein. For starters, just give your kid a cup of low-fat, plain yoghurt every day after a meal. For a more effective remedy, you can add sliced ginger root, honey, or pistachios to the cup.
