Pregnancy is a tumultuous time of checklists and how-to's. Mothers feel the need to be over-cautious of everything - including the dangerous succumbing to the Gods of cravings. As always, any unwashed, unpasteurised, canned, frozen and pre-made salads/fruits are a completely NO. Factors like bacteria, chemicals and improper quality maintenance are few of the many infectious downers. But do not worry ladies! Below are tips and tricks to avoid and you’ll be in a well-guided journey to maintain the best diet.

1. Papaya

Papaya (especially green) is the bright fruit that, when consumed ripe, is a suggested go-to-health remedy for heartburn and constipation due to its nutritious elements of Vitamin C. But studies infer that in the early pregnancy term unripe/raw papaya in pregnancy is dangerous and a bad food for pregnancy overall. And is even worse in intensity as the pregnancy progresses. It was even used as an infamous contraception.

Large quantities lead to miscarriage or early induced labour, swelling or bleeding of placenta/bleeding during pregnancy, uterine contractions and passed fetal abnormalities due to increased oxytocin secretion. As it is also rich in latex, allergies to related safe foods are also plausible to be developed in the mother. Additionally, the seeds are elemental of carpaine poison which can weaken the mother’s pulse and nervous system. For safety purposes, it is best to avoid this fruit altogether till the baby is born.

2. Mango

Although mangos are the luscious summer delicacy and great for nutrition maintenance - large amounts of the especial unripe/raw variety are extremely problematic and not the best food during pregnancy.

Mangos are dangerous for the last trimester since a strong sugar content can induce diabetes. This further leads to a weak pregnancy management and abnormal growth of the fetus. It is the said increase in growth that results in issues during normal labour. Mangos also have the tendency to instil the latex allergy that papayas create. If the craving devil persists, try to stick to only one well-washed piece!

3. Peaches and Plums

Peaches and plums (Vitamin A) are the subtle beauties that are preferred for larger satisfactory experiences. Yet, during pregnancy, these fruits are harmful to both mother and fetus. These lead to an increase in temperature, bleeding during pregnancy, irritated throat and allergic reactions. So it is best to consume only 2-3 well-peeled pieces per week.

4. Grapes (black and red)

This simple fruit can be popped in as a light snack but its consumption during pregnancy is shrouded in controversies. It is especially dangerous to eat grapes during the early pregnancy term as increased heat is built and there is a heavy amount of chemical content sprayed during cultivation. This leads to mutual health issues, hormonal imbalances and complicated pregnancies due to antioxidants.

All allergic-prone mothers with weak digestion should especially avoid the diabetic shocks that occur due to the fruit’s high pitches in carbohydrate-based sugar content. However, eating a few small grapes will ensure that you are getting the essential nutrients after being thoroughly washed and peeled.

5. Pineapples

Although it is a great source of nutrition - pineapples should be avoided during early pregnancy. The specific consequences include acidic reflux, heartburn, sensitive stomach, unripe poisoning or allergic reactions.

An enzyme called bromelain causes the dangerous side effects of softening of the cervix which results in early labour, miscarriage or uterine contractions. Pineapple has a rich sugar concentration, which can harm women with gestational diabetes. So eat only a few slices and under the guided discretion of your doctor.

6. Bananas

Bananas are the easiest to eat and is everyone’s favourite containing potassium, which is essential for your overall health. However, it is rich in carbohydrates which raises blood sugar levels. The elemental chitinase enzyme leads to the dangerous latex syndrome/allergy. Women who suffer from gestational diabetes should avoid eating a banana in large quantities. And, thus, it is best to avoid banana until after your baby is born.

7. Watermelons

Watermelons are high in water content and create the ultimate source of refreshment. But due to its kidney cleansing usage - it is quite harmful. This is mostly because the dual connections shared in a pregnancy will lead to a vulnerable case of toxin poisoning.

Additionally, due to high sugar contents, they are a complete no during the early pregnancy term. While only one slice or two per week is alright - it is best avoided until after full-term.

8. Dates

Dates are exceptionally high in natural sugar and for women with gestational diabetes, it is more difficult for cells to absorb the glucose. This further results in higher blood sugar levels, excessively excited uterus muscles and heat production. If taken in small helpings for cravings it is alright but this sweet treat is a dry fruit that should be avoided altogether until after your pregnancy to prevent any complications.

9. Bitter Melon

Bitter Melons are extremely good for health, especially for iron deficiencies. But during the sensitive term of pregnancy, it consists of a protein that severely affects the reproductive system. The resultant consequences include decreased blood sugar, irritant uterine contractions, miscarriage or premature birth, digestive issues and heartburn.

It also leads to the high toxicity of quinine/saponin glycosides/medicine/vicine nature which causes aberrant physical reactions like nausea, rashes, vomiting, headaches, or even coma. The consumption of Bitter Melon, although is limited it is extensively a no-no for the early pregnancy term.

10. Longan

Longan is a little known and an easy to miss fruit. Even though it is the ultimate all-in-one nutritious package, it encourages several dangerous consequences during pregnancy. This includes - inductive increase in the already present constipation symptoms, miscarriages, premature births and worsening of any present blood pressure symptoms. Longan is a definite NO during the first and last trimester - extremely dangerous for both parties.

11. Graviola

From the exotic tropical rainforests of the world - this fruit is another best source for nutritious developments. But during pregnancy - Graviola has a dangerous tendency for negative consequences like: dilated blood vessels, lowered blood pressure, increased nausea, vomiting, indigestion and fungal/yeast infections. In addition, there are various cardiovascular dysfunctions with large amount consumption of the fruit or even related products. Thus, it is required that a descriptive consultation is acquired.

12. Guava

This bright and attractive fruit is best for the regulation of nutritious deficiency and strength during old age. But during pregnancy, induced constipation and increased body temperatures create additional complications for the mother’s term.

13. Lichi

Litchis are the refreshment sources to go to at the number spot during summers. But due to its dangerously high sugar content - pregnancies are complicated extremely. The symptoms include severe diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular, cholesterol and weight mismanagement. Thus, post a descriptive consultation - little amounts are permitted for consumption.

14. Cranberry

Various studies have a divided opinion regarding whether this bright exotic snack is good during pregnancies. Yet, many cases have seen allergic reactions and gestational discomfort like diarrhoea. So if you’re unsure of your reaction or have a past/present issue of blood sugar - it is best to barter a timeout with the craving Gods!

15. Oranges

Although oranges are seen as the ideal breakfast starter - it is quite far away from being the best breakfast for pregnant women. Much like the other gestational diabetes-prone fruits above - oranges also raise risky levels of the sugar content. Thus, only limited amounts of consumption are permitted if cravings are not controllable.
