Five Fruits To Avoid During Pregnancy And Why

Pregnancy is a time when you have to be extra careful about everything. This is because the choices you make now concern not only you but also your soon to be born baby. And when it comes to food, making the right choice becomes necessary, as the baby’s health is at stake. Fruits are considered to be a great food in every situation, but contrary to the popular belief, we bring to your notice some fruits that should be avoided during pregnancy.

1. Papaya

Papaya, especially the unripe and semi-ripe ones are rich in latex, which is known to trigger uterine contractions. Food forms such as green papaya salad, as well as supplements containing papain enzyme should be avoided during the third and final trimester of pregnancy. For this reason, Papaya is in the list of foods to avoid during pregnancy. However, ripe papayas are excellent during pregnancy. Ripe papayas contain much lower levels of papain and are generally considered very healthy for pregnant women with its rich antioxidant and vitamin content and many other health benefits.

2. Grapes

Intake of grapes during pregnancy is shrouded with controversies. While some medical experts suggest avoiding grapes during pregnancy, others advise you to eat the fruit. Grapes must be avoided because of the high amount of insecticides sprayed on the grape plants. Also, grape skin is not digested easily and may cause constipation. Grapes are also rich in carbohydrates, which are converted to glucose by your body and may cause blood sugar levels to rise. This poses a risk of you and your child getting into a diabetic shock. However, eating a few grapes will ensure that you are getting the essential minerals and vitamins from the fruit.

3. Bananas

Banana is the easiest fruit to eat and that is why it is everyone’s favourite too. It contains potassium, which is essential for your overall health. However, like grapes, banana too is rich in carbohydrates, which cause blood sugar levels to rise. Women who suffer from gestational diabetes should avoid eating a banana in large quantities. Also, if you have pregnancy diabetes, it is best to avoid banana until after your baby is born.

4. Pineapple

Although it is a great source of proteins, minerals and vitamins, pineapple should be avoided in the early stages of pregnancy. An enzyme called bromelain, present in pineapple, causes the weakening of the cervix, resulting in early labour or miscarriage. Pineapple has a rich sugar concentration, which can harm women with gestational diabetes. It can also trigger uterine contractions, which is not good for the growing uterus.

5. Dates

Dates are exceptionally high in natural sugar. For women with gestational diabetes, it is more difficult for cells to absorb the glucose, which results in higher blood sugar levels. This sweet treat should be avoided until after your pregnancy to prevent any complications.

You should also try to avoid raw and unwashed fruits and vegetables. Canned and dried fruits should be avoided too, as they contain added sugar and preservatives.
