Everything You Need to Know About Dengue and Its Prevention

Dengue is a deadly disease that affects a lot of people - a staggering 400 million people worldwide fall prey to dengue mosquitoes every year. The difference between normal mosquitoes and dengue mosquitoes is that the infected mosquitoes will bite even during the day when your child goes out to play or is at school.

The disease not only affects young children and adults but even newborn babies and the effect can last for a very long time. For this reason, it is important for us to know how the disease first shows its symptoms in young children and babies.

Symptoms

Symptoms of dengue fever kick in about 4-7 days after being bitten by a dengue mosquito. The symptoms may include nausea, body pain, pain behind the eyes, vomiting and severe headaches. You should take your baby to the doctor if they start showing any of these symptoms. As it worsens, they may experience bleeding from the nose or mouth, decreased platelets in the blood, increased vomiting and stomach ache.

Depending on the severity of the fever, they may or may not have to be admitted to the hospital. Your doctor will tell you if they need to be hospitalized or not.

Causes

The disease is spread by a species of mosquito known as Aedes aegypti and sometimes by the Aedes albopictus. The virus is spread when a mosquito bites a human infected by the dengue virus and then bites someone else. It is possible to catch dengue fever more than once and there is a risk that it could be more aggressive the second time. Dengue mosquitoes bite during the day. So, it is necessary to keep yourself and your baby protected using mosquito repellents.

Prevention

The only way to prevent catching dengue is to avoid getting bitten by a mosquito since there is no vaccine available for this disease. There are a number of things you can do to protect your child from getting bitten by a mosquito. Here are a couple of the most effective ways to keep your child safe from a potentially deadly bite:

1. Mosquito Net

Make use of mosquito nets in the bedroom to ensure your child gets a peaceful, mosquito-free good night’s sleep. To make it more effective, you could buy mosquito nets that have been treated with an insecticide.

2. Cover up more

Wearing clothes that provide more skin coverage makes it difficult for mosquitoes to bite. This means making sure that your child wears full-sleeved clothes, socks and full-length pants. You should also encourage wearing a scarf that covers the neck and the face when stepping out. This will help prevent those mosquitoes from getting to you and your baby every time your outdoors.

3. Window screens

Ensure that your windows are covered with proper screens and mesh to keep mosquitoes in check. You could even add a mesh to your front door and balcony doors to keep away most of the mosquitoes and prevent them from entering your house.

4. Use Mosquito Repellents

Make sure to drain out excess water by loosening up the soil from time to time. Scrub all containers and vases regularly to get rid of mosquito eggs.

6. Stay safe in the evening

Mosquitoes are always out and about, especially in the early evenings when the sun starts to set. During the day, they stay in areas covered in shade. So if you do step out, make sure to use a personal mosquito repellent to protect yourself and your kids.
