Effective Remedies To Overcome Morning Sickness
The urge to run before you puke on your bed, nauseous randomness and extreme unjustified fatigue? Sounds familiar? It’s called being newly pregnant. In extreme cases (~ 1-2% cases), also known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum, a pregnant woman may suffer from dehydration and loss of body fluids. Further, there may be low potassium level in the blood (Hypokalemia), loss in body weight or an alteration in the acidity of the blood (Alkalosis). Morning sickness, however, is time independent, i.e. it can occur in any quarter of the day.
Factors attributing to morning sickness
Hormonal imbalance is a major factor contributing to morning sickness. Emotional turmoil (anxiety, depression, stress, and fatigue), decreased levels of blood sugar and vitamin deficiency can also trigger morning sickness. Factors such as strong odor, lack of physical activities and exercise, constipation, cannot be neglected either. But, the good news is, it is an indication of a healthy and normal pregnancy, an affirmation that the fetus is growing healthy.
Remedies to help overcome morning sickness
The symptoms of morning sickness appear from the 6th week onwards. Unfortunately, there is no definite cure or remedy to prevent morning sickness completely. However, in many women, there has been a considerable improvement from the 12th week onwards. A few home remedies, solutions, and lifestyle habits can help to deal with morning sickness better.
1. Sleep to good health
During pregnancy, a woman goes through a lot of physical, mental and hormonal changes. It is important for a pregnant woman to have a sound sleep and proper rest. Being great stress busters, they can provide great relief from nausea and vomiting.
2. A healthy diet to a healthy pregnancy
The secret to a healthy pregnancy lies in a healthy, nutritious and a balanced diet. Pregnant women should take in easily digestible and low-fat foods. Foods rich in proteins and carbohydrates (to some extent) are highly recommended to deal with morning sickness.
3. The goodness of fluids
A hydrated body can deal with morning sickness better. The goodness of water is known to all. Drink water and other fluids (coconut water, fresh fruit juice, buttermilk, and ice pops to name a few) at regular intervals and in small amounts.
4. Ginger to the rescue
Time and again, ginger and its supplements have proved their effectiveness against morning sickness. Ginger ale, in particular, is a great relief. However, it is advisable to consult your gynecologist before using ginger.
5. Skipping meals or staying empty stomach for too long
This has adverse side effects on pregnant women, with morning sickness being a common consequence. Tuck into small meals and snacks at regular intervals to deal with morning sickness.
6. Acupuncture and Acupressure wristbands, an effective remedy for some
The common symptoms of morning sickness can be greatly minimized using acupressure wristbands. Many pregnant women have benefitted immensely from acupressure wristbands.
