Do Bananas Make You Gain Weight?

Who doesn’t love bananas? For most of us, lunch or dinner is incomplete without having a banana at the end. It’s a classic fruit that can be enjoyed at all seasons. But a lot of people who are trying to lose weight avoid banana because it is believed that it might contribute to their weight gain. Is this a myth or is there some truth behind it?

  

A small banana contains around 90 calories and for a large banana, the calorie count is 150 max. Because of their sweet taste, bananas might be put under the ‘foods to avoid’ but it’s the wrong thing to do. The sugar present in bananas is natural fruit sugar which is completely different from pure white sugar. This fruit sugar is broken down into glucose which is required to power your body through the day for managing various activities. This is the reasons bananas make for a great pre-workout snack. If you’re going to the gym or for a walk or a jog, grab a banana and you’ll be good to go.

Bananas on their own won’t contribute much to your weight but when they’re part of a high-calorie diet, you might put on a few kgs.

Here’s why: The glucose that is obtained from bananas is stored by your liver to provide energy later on. If you have loads of bananas at once, your liver and muscles won’t be able to store all of it. In this case, it will be stored as fat. So, it’s more about the portions than the actual fruit itself. This is, in fact, applicable for most foods where how much you eat matters more than what you’re eating. Excess calories of 7000 increase your weight by 1 kg. An average human being consumes 1200 to 1800 calories a day so weight gain is impossible overnight. It takes weeks or even months. Imagine you’ve added an extra large banana as part of your diet - That’s 150 extra calories every day. Over a period of time, you’re bound to gain weight. 

Bananas are full of vitamins and minerals that are essential for you. So, on your weight loss journey, rather than cutting off banana entirely, eat it wisely. If you eliminate things like processed foods, junk foods and sugary foods, a banana won’t make a difference at all. It actually might be the perfect thing to reach for when you’re craving a little bit of sweetness.
