Depressed children are generally lacking in energy and enthusiasm These children often will be unable to tolerate frustration and may respond to even minor provocations with angry outbursts. An Irritable mood is usually more apparent at home than in other settings: many depressed youngsters who are explosive at home and seem to go out of their way to pick fights with family members are able to control themselves in school and other public settings. Children with such, Oppositional Defiant Disorder can be quite obedient and controlled outside the home. A new study on the Web site of the National Institutes of Health says that “diagnosing childhood depression can pose a challenge, even for mental health specialists.” This is true in part because signs and symptoms are different for children at the various developmental stages.

Below are certain symptoms to save your child:

There are also different types of depression depending on the symptoms of your child:

Major depressive disorder — also called major depression. The symptoms of major depression are disabling and interfere with everyday activities such as studying, eating, and sleeping. People with this disorder may have only one episode of major depression in their lifetimes. But more often, depression comes back repeatedly.

Dysthymic disorder — also called dysthymia. Dysthymia is mild, chronic depression. The symptoms of dysthymia last for a long time — two years or more. Dysthymia is less severe than major depression, but it can still interfere with everyday activities. People with dysthymia may also experience one or more episodes of major depression during their lifetimes.

Minor depression — similar to major depression and dysthymia. Symptoms of minor depression are less severe and/or are usually short term. Without treatment, however, people with minor depression are at high risk for developing major depressive disorder.

Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for depressed children. Depression is a real illness that requires professional help. Comprehensive treatment often includes both individual and family therapy. For example, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) are forms of individual therapy shown to be effective in treating depression. Treatment may also include the use of antidepressant medication. For help, parents should ask their physician to refer them to a qualified mental health professional, who can diagnose and treat depression in children and teenagers.

A child may need to go in for various or suitable therapies, here are a few:

Psychotherapy involves talking with a mental health care professional to treat a mental illness. Types of psychotherapy that have been shown to be effective in treating depression include:

1) Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps people change negative styles of thinking and behavior that may contribute to depression.

2) Interpersonal therapy (IPT), which helps people understand and work through troubled personal relationships that may cause or worsen depression.

Depending on the type and severity of your depression, a mental health professional may recommend short-term therapy, lasting 10 to 20 weeks, or longer-term therapy.

Let your child enjoy their childhood by removing them from the glitch of D-E-P-R-E-S-S-I-O-N.
