Cancer During Pregnancy: Fighting For Two

CANCER-the only 6 letters that bring cold shivers running down everybody’s spine. The diagnosis of cancer can happen anytime. Either you find out in the initial stags or worse...in the last stage. It is very difficult to detect cancer in the body unless you have persistent and recurring symptoms.

Cancer during pregnancy is an uncommon phenomenon. For years people have been struggling to deal with cancer, but thanks to the technological advancements, women who have been diagnosed with cancer can still get pregnant. The only thing is that they need to be very careful about the lifestyle and food habits they should be following.

Cancer rarely has any direct impact on the growing baby but it could get slightly complicated when it comes to delivering the baby.

Types of cancer that can occur during pregnancy:

-Breast Cancer

-Cervical Cancer

-Thyroid Cancer

-Melanoma

-Gestational Tumor

It often happens to young women. According to a study, 1 in every 3000 woman gets diagnosed with breast cancer when she’s pregnant. Her breasts become enlarged and change texture throughout the pregnancy, so it goes undetected. That’s exactly why women get diagnosed in the latter stages of breast cancer as compared to non-pregnant women.

How is Cancer treated during pregnancy?

They use several measures such as:

1.Surgery

In a surgery, the doctors remove the growing tumor and some healthy tissues around it to prevent it from spreading to the other healthy tissues. It is not harmful to the baby and it is the safest measure to beat cancer.

2.Chemotherapy

Doctors use chemotherapy drugs which help in destroying cancerous cells. It inhibits the growth of these cancerous cells. There’s a slight risk when it comes to using this method though. It is harmful to your baby if he the drug is given in the first 3 months of pregnancy. This is the time when the fetus is growing and developing his organs. It could result in a miscarriage or birth defects.

After that, the placenta acts as a covering sheath which protects the baby from being affected by the effect of drugs.

Can you breastfeed during treatment?

It isn’t advisable to nurse your baby after chemotherapy. It can become a source for the transmission of chemotherapy drugs. It is very bad for your baby’s health.
