Braxton-Hicks Contractions are basically a type of intermittent contractions that start in early pregnancy. Though they start in early pregnancy, they are noticed by the to-be mother by sometime after mid-pregnancy. They are a type of false or practice contractions that are basically preparing the body for the baby’s arrival and so that the mother is used to them.
These contractions increase in magnitude in the third trimester and arrive generally in the afternoon or evening and especially when you have had an active day. Though there is no defined pattern as such, they tend to increase as the delivery date comes closer as a way of preparing the body for the delivery time contractions.
These type of contractions come and go and generally, they are triggered when you are dehydrated, on your feet for too long or if you have a full bladder. Now you might ask “how will we know if what’s happening is Braxton-Hicks contractions or the real contraction?”. Well, here’s the answer. When you feel contractions happening, just time them for an hour or even half. Braxton-Hicks contractions are often irregular and go away after some time. On the other hand, the actual labor contractions will be regular and will only increase more in intensity with each passing time.
The best way to reduce these contractions is to not work too much especially during the 3rd trimester or at least do not keep standing for too long periods. Also, drinking lots of fluids when you are having the Braxton-Hicks contractions will help calm the body and thus stop the contractions.
