You may have heard about the benefits of castor oil from either your mother, grandmother or other relatives. It is indeed beneficial for your hair, skin and overall health. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and it can solve all kinds of skin problems. It is also known to be able to cure constipation. This is probably the reason why it is now being used as an ingredient in most soaps, cosmetics and even medicines.
Castor oil is obtained by pressing the seeds of the castor plant. The castor plant is native to India and Africa. Following are a few uses of castor oil:
1. Reduce acne
Yes, this is an oil that can actually help with those suffering from acne, unlike other oils that will only clog the pores. This is because castor oil contains ricinoleic acid which helps to fight the acne-causing bacteria. It penetrates deep into the skin, thereby protecting the skin and making it the perfect solution for acne. It needs to be applied to the skin before going to bed, after washing your face with warm water. This will allow the oil to seep into the pores of the skin. Rinse with cold water in the morning after you wake up.
2. Treats skin inflammation
If your skin is inflamed due to sunburn, acne or dry skin, castor oil can be used to cure it. It has a healing property that helps treat inflamed skin. All you need to do is take a cotton swab, dip it in castor oil, apply it onto the affected area and wash off after an hour.
3. Fades scars and blemishes
If you have any blemishes on your skin, simply apply a bit of castor oil on it every night before going to bed. It works by going deep into your skin and plumping up the skin cells. It promotes the growth of healthy skin cells. You will notice the results after a few weeks.
4. Moisturizes the skin
Castor oil acts as a wonderful moisturiser. It is definitely a great natural and inexpensive substitute for your regular moisturiser. All you need to do is apply it in a circular motion to a thoroughly cleansed face. It will hydrate your skin and cover up any dry patches.
5. Fight signs of ageing
When used topically, castor oil can help prevent slow down the signs of ageing by delaying the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. It penetrates deep into your skin and promotes the production of elastin and collagen which leaves the skin feeling smooth and soft. You can even apply it under your eyes to treat the fine lines that appear under the eye.
6. Prevents stretch marks
During pregnancy, your skin tends to stretch a lot in a short span of time. This is what leaves behind those stretch marks that we dread. Castor oil is rich in fatty acids which helps maintain the skin elasticity. Thus, applying castor oil during your pregnancy will make it less likely to develop stretch marks.
