In-laws can be both your biggest nightmare or your best dream depending on your comfort level with them. But often, they tend to be a nightmare, especially when there is such a big generation gap and almost zero trust. Though daughters-in-law are almost always in cross-hairs with their mothers-in-law, they are just too shy to talk to their fathers-in-law.
This, however, can be a big problem for not just you, but your husband and children as well and thus, it is very important to be in good terms with your in-laws. We are here to help you in doing just that by telling you a few ways through which you can win over your in-laws.
1. Always respect them
No matter how wrong they are, they are still your elders and thus, you should always respect them. Also, if you want them to respect you, you have to respect them first. Once they see that your respect for them is genuine, they will definitely start respecting you more.
2. Talk to them about your husband
The common thing between you and your in-laws is your husband, so maybe talking about him to your mother- and father-in-law can be a good icebreaker. However, one thing is really important, talking to them about their son and the general problems you are facing is fine, but never make them defend their son or they will start disliking you.
3. Show interest in their lives and hobbies
The best way to bond with your in laws is to talk to them about their lives, what they like to do or read or cook and both your in laws will start treating you like their own interest. If, by chance, you feel their life is not that interesting, it's best you still try to show some interest so you get interested eventually. They will notice the effort you are making.
4. Go out with them for some activity or shopping
If both you and your mother-in-law love shopping, then think no further. Go on a shopping spree with her and you both are sure to connect with each other. If you have same interests, you both could probably do some activity together. This is sure to bring about some connection between you and them.
5. Be ready to apologise
If you make a mistake or have even a little misunderstanding, be ready to apologise and do so with utmost sincerity. A person who apologises doesn't become small or lose their status in any way and you must not think that way either. Even if you feel you are innocent, just apologise at the moment. You can talk to them about it and explain it to them later.
Having a good relationship with your in-laws will always help you in the long run and will, in fact, give you another mother and father. Keep that in mind every time you interact with your in-laws and you will always be happy.
