It is not unusual to find kids who are otherwise happy and easy going suddenly becoming cranky. The frequency of crying becomes unexpectedly with the little munchkin getting irritated at the drop of a hat. If these sounds familiar, it is time to take a closer look at the baby for a possible sickness that might be bothering them. After all, nobody can understand a baby’s suffering and discomfort better than his /her parent.
Here is a look at some of the diseases that a baby can suffer from along with the remedial measures:
Fever as such cannot be termed as an illness per se. It is often an indication of an underlying illness that a baby might be suffering from. The enzymes that fight infection tend to work brilliantly at a higher temperature. The body does the same by triggering a rise in the body temperature. Thus, even a minor rise in temperature for babies above one year should be brought to the notice of the doctor at the earliest. Some home remedies that could work include - fluid intake, bath in tepid water, wiping the forehead with cold water, to name a few.
If parents come across symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, running nose, it can be assumed that the little one is suffering from cold. Children below the age of 6 tend to suffer from 5-6 cold cycles every year. Each cycle can last for two-three days. However, if the cold doesn’t subside after a couple of days, it is time to visit a doctor with the baby. Some of the must do’s include - running a humidifier at home (as dry air can aggravate the cold further), replacing the soft pillow with a slightly harder and lifted one, replacing the breast milk with electrolyte and water.
This is one of the most uncomfortable situations a baby could be in. Apart from being cranky, they would cry, lose interest in playing, or may create a fuss while eating food. The baby will also have a cough and runny nose among other things. As known to many, the virus that causes flu is contagious and can spread quickly in families and daycare families. The flu can last for 5-7 days. Some of the steps that could be performed at home to provide some relief include - intake of a high amount of fluid, stay away from dust particles. One should also keep the baby in one room to avoid the spread of the infection. A doctor should be consulted if the condition doesn’t improve within five days. In case the baby is less than 2 months old, a doctor should be visited within a couple of days and adequate vaccination and medicines should be consumed.
While the condition might be a little tricky to understand, some of the associated symptoms include tugging the ear, mild fever, stuffy nose, to name a few. Infants are prone to ear infections. Thus, waste no time and consult the doctor as early as possible. While most ear infections clear on their own, the acute and severe ear infections require antibiotics to relieve the pain. Any existing antibiotic might have to be halted during the course of the treatment or as per the doctor recommendation. A doctor should be able to understand the internal condition once he/she takes a look at the baby’s ear.
