Seeing your baby’s first tooth is a sheer joy for most of the parents. It might happen anytime from the 4th month or your child might even take his own time to let that tooth erupt. In any case, it is pretty natural for parents to think about how to provide a little extra nutrition that your baby needs, and also, worried about what he can chew with no teeth. We've rounded up some of the best foods for your toothless baby that could satisfy their hunger and provide them with the nutrition.

Fruits

Fruits are highly beneficial for baby’s health. Most of the fruits could be fed directly if they are ripe. Harder fruits could be stewed for a few minutes to make them soft. In any case, ensure the fruits are peeled and without seeds. Some of the fruits which could be fed directly are Bananas, Avocado, Peach, Mango, Watermelon, Muskmelon and the some of the fruits which should be stewed are Pear and apple.

Vegetables

Vegetables are hard if fed directly for babies without teeth. So, either steam or boil until just soft. If steamed or boiled too much, it becomes mushy and loses the texture you are looking for. Some of the vegetables you could feed your baby are Carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, potato, pumpkin, zucchini, beetroot.

Eggless whole wheat apple pancakes

Pancakes are a sure shot hit in the family. These sweet and soft pancakes are a universal favourite for kids.

Ingredients:

Wheat flour (100 gm), Apple (1 medium size), Oil (1tbsp), Cinnamon powder (¼ tbsp), Ghee/Butter (½ tbsp), Jaggery (1 tbsp - Optional), Salt (a pinch), Baking powder (½ tbsp - Optional), Water (50 ml - can substitute with milk)

Method:

1. In a bowl, add wheat flour, baking powder, ground cinnamon, salt, oil and water. Peel the apple and grate it excluding the core of the apple.

2. Add the grated apple to flour mixture and let it sit for 10 minutes. After 10 mins, heat a griddle on medium flame and grease it with ghee/butter.

3. Pour a ladle of the batter on to the pan. Don't swirl it like the normal dosa. You can give them funny shapes to make it attractive to your baby and make it smaller in size so that it could be easier for your baby to hold and eat.

4. Cover the pancakes with a lid and let it cook on a low flame for a minute or two - this helps in the proper cooking of apple and its blending with the batter. When the bubbles appear on the surface, flip it and let the other side cook.

5. After both sides are cooked, cool it and serve it to your baby with dates syrup or honey (It should be avoided for babies under one year).

Flavoured Paneer

Paneer is an excellent source of protein and calcium. It could help in strengthening the muscles and bones in growing kids. Flavoured paneer could tickle your child’s taste buds and also could be healthy.

Ingredients:

Milk (1 litre), curd (2-3 tbsp), Mixed herbs (1 tbsp), Black pepper powder (½ tbsp), ginger juice (2 tbsp), Coriander (Finely chopped - optional), Salt

Method:

1. To prepare the paneer, start by heating the milk and once it starts to boil, lower the heat. To the milk, add mixed herbs, ginger juice, black pepper powder, curd and salt and mix well by stirring.

2. The greenish pale whey separates from the milk. It might take a few minutes. After the whey separates completely, turn off the heat.

3. On a bowl, place a sieve and pour the curdled milk to separate the milk solids. Let the paneer sit on the sieve till all the water drains away.

4. Transfer it to a plate and cover it with another plate and press it down with a heavy object.

5. After some time, the paneer will be ready in the form of blocks and can be cut into cubes or triangles. It could be fed directly to your kid or could be put in the gravy.

A word of caution: Introduce these foods into your baby's diet only after consulting with the paediatrician.
