Baby care: Autism Among Children

We all love to talk or communicate various things to various people. The same holds good for kids as well . But when our own children do not communicate or rather cannot, it’s heart breaking for the family and people around . In order to set things straight, let us all make sure our kids do not fall into the autism pit, with prior evaluations and diagnosis. Communication difficulties can vary from developing spoken language, sign language, to limited understanding. Some of these children might also develop something called echolalia — repeating words that may have little meaning for the child or repeating what you say. For example, when asking a child if he wants a drink, he may reply ‘Do you want a drink?’ The child may also use the words ‘Do you want a drink?’ to actually ask for a drink. He may also repeat words or phrases that he has heard in the past — including phrases from television programmes. For those children whose language develops beyond echolalia, they may have great difficulty with grammar and word meanings. Let us also have a broad perspective of the autism symptoms :


Obsessions
Fears
A lack of awareness of danger
Ritualistic play and behaviour
Inappropriate eye contact
Hypersensitivity to sound, light
Spinning objects
Hand flapping
Difficulty relating to others and making friends
Difficulty in communicating (some children may not talk at all)
Being unable to engage in imaginative play

Some children show signs of ASD (Autism spectrum disorder ) in early infancy. This disorder impacts how a child perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in crucial areas of development- social interaction, communication and behavior. Most children with ASD are slow to gain knowledge or skills, and some have signs of lower than normal intelligence. Other children with ASD have normal to high intelligence — they learn quickly, yet have trouble communicating and applying what they know in everyday life and adjusting to social situations. A small number of children with ASD are savants — they have exceptional skills in a specific area, such as art, math or music. These type of symptoms varies from children to children.If you suspect that your child may have ASD, discuss your concerns with your doctor. The symptoms associated with ASD can also be linked with other developmental disorders. The earlier that treatment begins, the more effective it will be.

What Causes Autism:


This disorder has no single known cause. Given the complexity of the disorder, and the fact that symptoms and severity vary, there are probably many causes. Both genetics and environment may play a role.


Genetic problems. Several different genes appear to be involved in autism spectrum disorder. For some children, autism spectrum disorder can be associated with a genetic disorder, such as Rett syndrome or fragile X syndrome. For others, genetic changes may make a child more susceptible to autism spectrum disorder or create environmental risk factors. Still other genes may affect brain development or the way that brain cells communicate, or they may determine the severity of symptoms. Some genetic problems seem to be inherited, while others happen spontaneously.


Environmental factors. Researchers are currently exploring whether such factors as viral infections, complications during pregnancy or air pollutants play a role in triggering autism spectrum disorder.

Treatment for ASD:


It can be difficult to know which intervention will work best for your child because each person with ASD is affected differently.


Some types of intervention can involve hours of intensive work, and this isn’t always possible for many families because of the practical, emotional and financial commitments necessary.


Any basic intervention should focus on important aspects of your child’s development. These are:


communication skills — such as the ability to start conversations
social interaction skills — such as the ability to understand other people’s feelings and respond to them
cognitive (thinking) skills — such as encouraging imaginative play
academic skills — the “traditional” skills a child needs to progress with their education, such as reading, writing and maths


Research has also found that children with ASD often respond better to information that’s presented visually.
