A lot of mothers worry about chemicals that are present in baby skin care products and their harmful effects. Acne, rashes, and skin irritation are a few side effects of using chemical filled products. These chemicals can even enter your baby’s body and cause unnecessary complications. Maybe it’s finally time to chuck all of those plastic bottles out of the door and embrace what nature has to offer.
1. Baby lotion
Keeping your infant’s skin baby smooth is no joke. You might’ve stocked up on all different kinds of baby lotions that will “soothe” or “enhance” your baby’s skin texture. But all you ever need is a pure refined coconut oil that can act both as a moisturizer and a massage oil. It can be easily absorbed by your baby’s skin and even if your baby sucks on their thumb or toes, it’s totally safe. You can even use a mixture of shea butter and coconut oil if you want to avoid the greasy feeling.
Diapers are super expensive and your baby runs through them like flash. So, you can switch to cloth diapers that are super soft and just as comfortable, if not more for your little one. Cloth diapers might cost a little more than diapers when you buy them the first time but they are reusable so they work out in the long run. Try and get the best quality cotton blend cloth diapers or you can even get them stitched if the right material is available to you. But make sure to clean and sanitize the cloth diapers after every use. You won’t have to worry about diaper rashes anymore!
3. Baby powder
Combine a quarter cup of bentonite clay powder and 1 tablespoon of arrowroot powder and pour it into a glass jar with holes on top for sprinkling. You can use this powder after every diaper change but it is not recommended if your baby is younger than 3 months or if you suspect he has a yeast infection. This can be used both for disposable as well as cloth diapers.
4. Massage oil
Pure olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil are great oils for massaging your baby. You can even mix olive oil and coconut oil to get the best of the two before your rub your little one’s tummy, legs, and arms with it. If it’s before bedtime, you can add a few drops of essential oil like lavender to soothe your baby and make her go to sleep without much fuss.
5. Baby wipes
Baby wipes and diapers go hand-in-hand. During a diaper change, you clean your little one’s tush with the wipe and throw it away. That’s a lot of paper going to waste and not to mention you have to restock on these wipes every week or so. A better alternative is to use a soft washcloth or a piece of flannel cloth soaked in baby wipe solution that you can make yourself too. A little soap, a little oil and a few drops of essential oils like chamomile or lavender and voila, you have your baby wipe solution.
