Alkaline Water: Is It Worth All The Hype?

It is the first month of the new year and we are all trying out new methods of getting healthier. This can mean eating the right foods and exercising regularly. Some of us are more motivated than others to stay true to our exercise regime. Those who do stick to their exercise routine are more likely to eat healthy than those who don’t exercise.

When you aren’t able to exercise or eat healthy, you would be on the lookout for alternative ways to get healthy and fit. This can include health drinks or foods that are guaranteed to make you get healthy. Alkaline water is one such drink that boasts to be one such drink that not only helps lose weight but also has a number of other benefits. This is why it has become so popular lately.

What Is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is water that has a pH that is higher than 7 (neutral) which is the pH level of distilled water. pH level is a measure of the acidity of a substance with 0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline (or least acidic). Typically, alkaline water has the pH value of 8 or 9. You can either opt for natural alkaline water or buy artificially made alkaline water. Do note that the artificially made alkaline water will not have the minerals present in natural alkaline water. It may just have a higher pH value. What Are The Benefits Of Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is known for being a powerful antioxidant. This helps to protect our bodies from free radicals which can cause a number of unwanted health problems by damaging the immune system. Alkaline water is also known to be more hydrating than regular drinking water. This is because it has smaller molecular content when compared to normal water. It acts as a detox to help wash away toxins from your body.

What Are The Side Effects Of Drinking Artificial Alkaline Water?

Lowering of the overall acidity of your body can lower the body’s natural ability to kill bacteria. Too much alkaline in your body can cause metabolic alkalosis but you would need to consume a significant amount of alkaline water to reach this state. Metabolic alkalosis has serious consequences and can even be fatal. Other minor side effects are vomiting, nausea, and muscle twitches. After consuming artificially made alkaline water over a period of time, the small intestine can become overly alkaline and cause severe side effects such as hypertension, anxiety, abnormal heart behaviour, body pain, and bladder or urinary tract infections.

Should You Drink Alkaline Water?

Now there are a couple of things that nobody will tell you about alkaline water. When you consume natural alkaline water, the body benefits from the minerals (like calcium and magnesium) in the water that makes this water more alkaline. It is more easily absorbed from this natural alkaline water. It can be prepared at home by adding either a bit of baking soda to water or by adding just a few drops of lemon to the water (lemon, though acidic, has an alkalizing property).

When you drink the artificially ionized water, the body assumes it is going to receive all the minerals as well. But the ionized water doesn’t have as many minerals as the natural one. The naturally alkaline water costs too much to make so they simply don’t make them. Meanwhile, this artificially ionized water not only causes all these side effects, it even costs twice as much as regular water.

So instead of spending so much to buy alkaline water, why not stick to good old regular drinking water?
