Is your little one spitting up or vomiting after having a meal? If you’re worried about this happening then find out its causes, symptoms and cure to understand it better and also make your little one feel better.
Acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux is pretty common among infants but if it happens more often like vomiting frequently and results in weight loss or difficulty in feeding then it could something a little more serious like GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease).
This can cause the stomach content along with the acids to be pushed upwards into the mouth and eventually out of the mouth. Among babies, this is caused by certain problems in the gastrointestinal tract. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the baby is unhealthy. But there are cases where babies with brain, nerves and muscles disorders experience GER or GERD a lot.
For toddlers and older children, this could be because they experienced Acid reflux even as infants.
The most commonly seen symptoms are
- Frequent vomiting
- Difficulty (choking or gagging) while feeding
- Sour taste in the mouth
Babies usually tend to outgrow GERD but there are a few things you can do to make it easier on them.
1. Keep the head of the bassinet elevated.
2. After feeding, hold the baby upright for a few minutes.
3. Try feeding smaller portions of food.
For older children, similar tips are applicable but instead of the bassinet, it will be the bed’s head that needs elevating and don’t let the child sleep immediately after having food. The type of food you child eats also plays a vital role - some believe that spicy foods, carbonated drinks make it worse.
