However, the hormonal changes and other pregnancy-related changes (both internal as well as external) can have a punishing effect on her skin resulting in hyperpigmentation, dry skin, acne, to name a few. Thus, in addition to taking care of the general health, proper skin care is also important during pregnancy. Keep the skin clean

Keeping the skin clean is an important aspect of skincare regime. The environmental pollutants, dust, dirt, sweat, can wreak havoc affecting the skin like never before. Make sure you wash your face with a face wash twice daily (in the morning and before going to bed). Use a gentle face wash that is suitable for your skin type.

Keep the skin well hydrated

Drinking water and other healthy fluids such as coconut water at regular intervals can play a significant role in eliminating the harmful toxins out of your body. It also helps to restore the natural glow of the skin, taking care of a myriad of skin problems.

Exfoliate the skin well

The benefits of exfoliating the skin are immense. In addition to getting rid of the dead and dry skin cells which are present on the skin surface, it also improves the overall blood circulation. An improved blood circulation can work wonders ensuring a healthy looking, soft and glowing skin. However, it is always advisable to use a mild scrub.

You can also prepare the scrub at home. All you need is white or brown sugar (~ 1/2 a cup). Mix this well with olive oil. You can also use grapeseed oil. Use a good sunscreen

Many people miss out on this important part of the skincare. During pregnancy and with all the hormonal changes, the skin often tends to become more sensitive. Thus, it is always a safe bet to use a good sunscreen (even when at home) to keep the skin well protected. For maximum results, do not just go for any sunscreen you can get your hands on. Use the one that suits your skin the best.

Aloe vera gel to the rescue

The use of aloe vera gel also goes a long way to provide a soothing effect on the skin, protecting the skin from sunburns and acne problems. It is also very effective against stretch marks (helps to lighten the stretch marks making them less visible), a problem commonly encountered during pregnancy.

Moisturize the skin well

A good moisturizer can work wonders for the skin, keeping the skin fresh and hydrated. The use of cocoa butter based creams and moisturizers are highly advisable. Cocoa butter helps to overcome the skin dryness to a great extent. Those suffering from skin rashes and sunburns also benefit immensely from the use of cocoa butter. If chapped lips have been giving you sleepless night, apply cocoa butter, and soft lips become a reality.

Nourishing diet

A balanced diet can be instrumental in keeping the skin healthy. Enrich the diet with foods such as broccoli, nuts, asparagus, avocado, seeds, and beans. Most of these foods are rich in folic acid, a vitamin known to promote healthy skin. It protects the skin from sun damage, prevents skin pigmentation and discoloration, reduces and slows down the signs of skin aging. It also helps to improve the blood circulation.
