A Guide For New Moms: Taking Care of Yourself
Moms forget to take care of themselves in the process of looking after their little angels. If moms spend all their time watching their baby either sleep or explore their new world, they would not have time for much else. Of course it can all be very exciting and overwhelming, but it is equally important for moms to take time to look after themselves.
So, how do you suppose you could do this? Here are a few tips that could help make the lives of mommies a little easier.
1. Take help from family
Don’t shy away from asking for help. Raising a young one is not an easy task. As the saying goes, it takes an entire village to raise a child. This is true because they need constant attention and this would be nearly impossible to manage by just one person. So, do ask your family for help. If no one is available, hire someone to help look after the baby and the household chores.
2. Nap while your baby naps
All that your baby does when he/she is not crying or eating is sleep. Of course he/she is not going to sleep for too long. Your baby will wake up every couple of hours when he/she feels some discomfort and then cry out for you. But altogether, your baby is going to be asleep for at least 15 hours every day. This is why it is a good idea to take naps while your baby naps. This way you can both catch up on some much-needed sleep.
3. Keep a water container by your bed side
It is a smart idea to keep a water container by your bed so you don’t have to leave your room while trying to get some well-deserved rest. The idea is to avoid having to strain yourself while napping with your baby.
4. Prioritize your tasks
One way to prioritize your tasks is to decide between what you have to do and what you want to do. Write down two separate lists with these tasks. Make a third list of tasks that are in between. For example, tasks like breastfeeding, making your baby sleep and tending to your baby’s other needs are the ones you have to do first. So, prioritize them. Cleaning up the house is something you can put off for later and you can always ask for help with such tasks.
5. Get some fresh air
It is important for you to get out of the house for fresh air. So, grab any opportunity you can to do just that. Step outdoors to run an errand. If you can’t leave your baby behind because nobody is there to look after him/her at home, take him/her with you. Even a short drive or a leisurely stroll is enough to take your mind off it all and give you some quiet time.
Recovery stage for mums - don’t overexert
New moms should take it easy on themselves post birth. Overexerting yourself with difficult chores is definitely a bad idea. You should try and split the work with your husband, mother or any family member or friend willing to help. Hiring a nanny would be a great idea too, and it is definitely a good investment for when you need some fresh air and time on your own.
