8 Tips To Help Your Child Stay Cool This Summer

tips to keep your child happy and cool in summer

Summer is the time for us to plan fun vacations with the family. It is the season to enjoy all those fun summer fruits - grapes, watermelon, guava, pineapple and of course, the king of fruits - mango. But summer is also the season when children become extra fussy. This is a common problem faced by parents but it is not impossible to solve it.

All you need to do is figure out what it is that is making your little one fussy. It could be heat, dehydration or hunger.

Try out these tips to stay cool in the summer:

1. Chug Loads Of Water

First things first, make sure your child is drinking enough water every day. Ideally, they should be drinking as much water as they lose through natural bodily functions. If your child finds the taste of water to be boring, try offering them flavoured water. For this, all you need to do is boil water with a few cloves or jeera. Cool this down in the fridge and then offer it to your child. They are more likely to drink this flavoured water. When you are heading out with your child, make sure to carry water for your child and yourself.

2. Use A Fan Only When The Temperature Is Below 35oC

When the temperature of the environment is cooler than the body temperature, using a fan will help cool you down. However, when the temperature rises above 35oC, a fan will only make you feel hotter. This is when other methods of cooling down may help - bathing in cool water, using an AC, etc.

3. Eat Lots Of Fruits And Vegetables

If your child isn’t drinking enough water despite all the tricks, you should ensure they are eating enough fruits and vegetables. This will also increase the water intake. You can do this by making yummy juices or a fruit chaat. You can also try making fruit popsicles by freezing the fruit. Although this reduces the nutrient value, it is really refreshing and it is a much healthier option than giving them those processed ice popsicles sold at stores. Some great summer fruits to try out are grapes, papaya, pineapple, mango and watermelon.

4. Wear Comfortable Cotton Clothes

Make sure to dress them up in loose cotton clothes that cover them up completely. The clothes should be light and breathable. Organic cotton is the best option for little children with sensitive skin. When possible, stay in the shade and make sure your little one stays hydrated.

5. Story Time And Board Games

The summer is a good time to invest in buying some fun board games and story books. This will help reduce the amount of time your child spends in front of the screen (mobile, TV, laptop, etc). Read out moral based stories to your child. Story time is a great way to bond with your child while simultaneously imparting wisdom. Different board games will enable your to develop different skills. You could also try teaching them games like tic-tac-toe or Uno. 3-4 year old kids would be able to understand these games.

6. Stay Indoors In Those Peak Hours

This may sound like the simplest tip yet. The summer heat peaks between 10 AM and 3 PM. So it is best to stay indoors during those hours. Even if you do decide to step out with your child, make sure to carry an umbrella to block out the sun and wear a good amount of sunscreen to protect your little one’s skin.

7. Summer Hats, Sunglasses And Sunscreen

When you are heading outdoors, make sure to always carry a nice summer hat and some sunscreen. You should also carry sunglasses to protect your little one’s eyes. The hat should be made out of a comfortable and breathable material. This will help keep the baby’s head cool. Make sure it has a velcro fitting or a button to keep it strapped on their head as they run around.

8. Cool The Rooms Down

During the day, you should keep the windows and doors open. This will allow fresh air to come inside. Use a light coloured curtain to keep the heat out of the room. Summer bugs could come crawling in through the open doors and windows. So, make sure to use a bug spray to keep them away.

The above tips are sure to keep your little one cool and calm. Now, you will be able to enjoy the summer with your little one. Do you have any summer tips that you would like to share? Share them in the comments!
