7 Things To Do After You Have An Abortion

An abortion is an intimate and personal procedure. Everyone reacts to it differently. Your emotional and physical recovery from an abortion will vary from others. It is often difficult to know what is the right way to recover from it. So many questions arise after having an abortion. Is it possible to get pregnant again? Will it affect my bodily functions?

Well, we have some tips to guide you through all of those questions.

1. Take a pregnancy test

Yes, you just had an abortion. But you can’t be completely sure that the procedure was successful and that you aren’t pregnant anymore. So wait for a few weeks and take a pregnancy test.

2. Wait a month before exercising
 

Right now, your body is still recovering from the procedure. Allow at least 4 weeks before you start exercising like before. Until then, avoid any kind of strenuous activities.

3. Can expect breasts to leak

If you were over 10 weeks pregnant when you got an abortion, it is possible for you to experience breast leakage. Your breasts may also get bigger to produce milk for your baby. This is because of the hormones released while you were pregnant. It will take some time for your body to go back to normal.

4. Drink a lot of fluids
 

Consider eliminating or at least limiting carbonated drinks during the recovery period. Instead, opt to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. You can try drinking lemon water (few drops of lemon in a glass of water) and coconut water when you get bored of plain old water.

5. What you should avoid for 2 weeks

Avoid lifting anything that is too heavy for at least two weeks. The maximum weight you can lift is 7 kg. Also, avoid wearing tampons as they may cause an infection. Stick to using pads and make sure to change them regularly. Lay off sex as well since it can also lead to an infection while you are recovering.

6. Talk to someone if you need to
 

If you ever feel overwhelmed with emotions, just talk to someone about it. Sometimes all we need to do is to vent to someone. Anyone would do - your husband, mom, MIL, father, FIL, a sibling or a close friend. Tell that trusted person how you feel and whatever is running through your mind. Don’t hold back on your thoughts or emotions - just let it all out. If you don’t wish to talk about it, you can at least try to write down your thoughts or express yourself through art. If all this doesn’t help, it is best to seek professional help as soon as possible.

7. Wait 2 months before trying to conceive again
 

You will resume ovulation just two weeks after the abortion. However, it may take 1-2 months for you to recover physically and mentally. That’s why it is advised to wait for 2 months before trying to make a baby again. This will allow your body to recover completely and become healthy again.
