1. Smoking and Drinking
Smoking and drinking during pregnancy are both very dangerous for the baby, and you already know that you have to avoid these bad habits when you’re pregnant. But if you’re planning a pregnancy, it is equally important to keep a tab on your and your partner’s smoking and drinking, as these habits can impact both of your fertility.
2. Excessive Caffeine
That daily cup of coffee is not all that bad for you, but if you’re consuming more than 200 mg of caffeine per day, you should really consider cutting back. Don’t exceed your two cups a day when you’re planning for a pregnancy anytime soon. It’s also a good idea to cut it out altogether during your pregnancy, so that your baby’s health is the best it can be.
3. High-mercury Fish
Although seafood contributes some nutritional value and help you get pregnant, the wrong type of fish can often have the opposite effect. Most fish swallow pollutants that are dumped in the sea, and one of the most dangerous toxins that your fish may be polluted with is mercury. Mercury is a highly poisonous heavy metal, and ingesting it through the fish can lead to mercury poisoning in the long run, reducing your chances of conception. So to keep you and your baby healthy, you should avoid high-mercury fish altogether. These include mackerel, swordfish, shark and some varieties of tuna. You should also avoid raw or under-cooked fish, eggs and meat as they increase your risk of infections and illness. Opt for low-mercury fish and limit the servings so that you can give yourself a dose of Omega-3 healthy fats without the risk of mercury poisoning!
4. Processed Foods
Processed foods are high in sugar and unhealthy fats - especially trans fats. Eating too much of these foods can lead to an unhealthy spike in blood sugar and blood pressure levels, which can have an impact on your fertility and make it harder to conceive. Instead, opt for fruit or dry fruits to satisfy your sweet tooth, and eat healthy fats like nuts, dairy products and avocado.
5. Workplace Hazards
It’s also important to consider your work atmosphere. If you work in dangerous conditions with pollution and toxins around you, it is best to think of a more baby-friendly job first. Working in dangerous work environments can have major impacts like lead poisoning, which can affect your fertility, pregnancy and the health of your kids too. You must also think about whether there is danger of injury and accidents at your workplace, and choose an alternative career for the time-being if not for the long term.
6. Stressing Out
Stress levels these days are high, and when you’re under the pressure to conceive, it can feel worse. But stressing out is really bad for you when you’re trying to conceive, and it can affect ovulation as well as conception. You might be constantly obsessing about ovulation and trying very hard to conceive, but sometimes, it helps to step away from it for a while, take a break and try again once you feel less stressed and more ready. Try to manage your stress as it can affect your physical and emotional health.
7. Too Much Or Too Little Exercise
Exercise is an important component in your health, and this is equally applicable when you are trying to conceive. Not exercising, or exercising in extremes are both unhealthy. When you’re trying to conceive, follow a healthy exercise plan that gets your heart rate going and strengthens your entire body without straining you.
