When we think of blood pressure, the first thing that pops up in our minds is salt. The high sodium content in salt is known to increase blood pressure levels. During pregnancy, the blood pressure levels are known to vary, so it’s important for you to have a good diet to keep them in control. You can start by reducing the salt you add to your everyday meals but there are also certain food items that you thought were harmless that impact your blood sugar levels.
Coffee contains a stimulant called caffeine which is responsible for that jolt you get when you have a cup of coffee early in the morning. This caffeine is believed to increase your blood pressure levels temporarily because of the blockage of a hormone called adenosine which keeps the blood vessels wide.
2. Processed foods
Processed foods like pizzas, burgers, chips and so on tend to have a lot of salt content in them which is added to increase their shelf life and taste. This also includes baked goods like cookies, sweets and snacks that might not appear to be salty on the first glance. Even ketchup, popcorn, dresses, instant soup powders are all brimming with salt.
3. Energy drinks
In a recent study, it was seen that people who consume energy drinks on a daily basis had their blood pressure levels increase by 6.4% on an average. The supplements, stimulants, caffeine and added sugar that are present in energy drinks contribute towards increased blood pressure levels.
4. Frozen seafood
Fish or any other seafood that is frozen is infused and doused with salt to improve the longevity. It’s better you go for fresh seafood rather than frozen ones for this reason.
5. Dairy products
Dairy products might be rich in calcium, but they also contain sodium. In fact, one glass of low-fat milk contains around 100 mg of sodium. Apart from milk, there are products like butter and cheese that contain added salt. So look out for the label before you add these dairy products to your grocery cart.
Excessive drinking is linked to dangerous levels of blood pressure. Having as little as 3 drinks in one go can actually increase your blood pressure immediately and temporarily but for a person who drinks often, the blood pressure levels rise and stay at the top.
7. Instant noodles
Instant noodles like Ramen and Maggi are our go-to food items because of their convenience and taste. But what you don’t know is that just one packet of these noodles can contain up to 1500 mg of sodium. Not to mention the preservatives that don’t do any good for your health either.
Although diet plays a major role in controlling blood pressure levels, being stress-free and exercising often are also really important to stay healthy.
