7 Remedies For Morning Sickness

Many moms-to-be experience nausea during pregnancy, more popularly known as morning sickness. It is caused by hormonal changes, vitamin deficiency, low blood sugar, strong smells, foul odours, lack of exercise, fatigue, stress and so on.

To help you, here are a few ways to deal with morning sickness.

1. Ginger tea

Ginger tea is a proven remedy to combat morning sickness. Add a cut of or grated ginger to black tea or just hot water and sip on it. You can also strain it before drinking. Other teas like peppermint and lemon will also help you with nausea. Since it is herbal, it is completely safe for you and your baby. Ginger in other forms such as capsules or even crystallized ginger will also help.

2. Water

As simple as it may seem, women who drink a glass of water every hour tend to experience lesser days of morning sickness than women who don’t. Other than the obvious thirst you feel, things like the colour of your urine can also help determine if your body’s dehydrated. Ideally, it should be clear. If it’s dark or has an extra strong smell, you need to hydrate yourself.

3. Don’t starve yourself

If you think it would be better to skip meals and keep your stomach empty so as to curb morning sickness, you’re wrong. Eating small meals throughout the day, rather than large ones, is recommended. Try to snack on foods like nuts, apple slices or peanut butter every hour or so.

4. Eat right

For most pregnant women, even the smell of greasy, fatty foods makes them nauseous. These foods are known to intensify your morning sickness. Other foods to avoid are caffeine, artificial sweeteners, spicy foods and packaged/processed foods.

5. Vitamin B intake

Regular intake of Vitamin B6 has been known to reduce nausea and vomiting associated with pregnancy. However, make sure to consult your doctor before deciding upon it.

6. Lemon

Sniffing on lemon, having lemon drops or drinking a lemon-based drink helps in dealing with morning sickness. You can also try drinking Brewer’s yeast and tomato juice with lemon. Other fresh fruits like berries, oranges and kiwis, which are rich in vitamin C, are also healthy for you.

7. Light exercise

Going for a walk and taking in some fresh air or doing mild exercises is good for you. Yoga is a popular choice. It keeps you healthy and helps digest your food. High intensity exercises are not recommended.

Try to understand your body, as every pregnancy experience is unique and you alone can determine what foods and exercises work best for you.
