As a parent, sickness is something you’re all too familiar with. I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me your baby falls sick every other month. As tiny humans, their bodily systems are still developing. This means that their immune system is not as developed as yours which means they are extremely susceptible to infections and bacteria. Worry not, as we have some simple home remedies that you can try that are natural and pretty much guaranteed to help you and your little one.
Use a humidifier or a steam machine to release water vapour into the air. This helps by clearing the nasal passage and loosening the phlegm, therefore making breathing easier for your baby. You could see the same effects by giving your baby a warm shower. This helps reduce the chances of suffocation and discomfort and doesn’t involve giving your baby unnecessary medicines and drugs.
2. Garlic and Ajwain Pouch
To make this you need to dry roast a couple of cloves of garlic and a couple of tablespoons of ajwain. After roasting, simply make them into a pouch by wrapping them in a cloth. These have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties which should keep germs at bay and protect your baby from infections. Make sure that the pouch is out of reach of your child to prevent him/her from trying to eat it. Alternatively, you could heat this pouch SLIGHTLY to make it warm, and then rub it on your kid’s chest. This will help loosen phlegm and get rid of congestion.
3. Nasal Saline Drops
Nasal saline drops do not contain too many chemicals which makes it safe and easy to use. What these do is they help clear the nasal passage and make it comparatively less stuffy. This makes breathing easier. It also prevents the nostrils from forming a crusty layer which can be a source of great discomfort for your child. Make sure that your kid’s head is tilted so that the medicine doesn’t flow out.
You can use different oils to give your baby a massage such as mustard oil or coconut oil. These can be paired with rock salt, kalonji, garlic, and other substances like carom seeds, to make them more effective. Warm up the oil and add the condiment of your choice. With the warm oil, gently massage your child’s chest and back. This has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. In addition to this, it helps free up congestion and spread warmth throughout the body. Spreading a few drops of Eucalyptus oil around the room also helps clear up nose blockages.
5. Lemon, Honey, Ginger
These three are nature’s natural remedy for most minor ailments. Honey helps to soothe irritated throats. It is also anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal in nature. Giving your kids lemon juice and honey is pretty much a sure shot solution. It tastes nice, keeps them hydrated, and helps get rid of colds and coughs. Another tasty drink to cure a cough is ginger water with honey.
For very young babies below 6 months, breast milk would help fight off bacteria that cause colds and coughs. It has antibodies which help increase immunity in your baby. For older children (toddlers) you can try making them drink milk with turmeric. It helps fight off dry coughs and provides fast relief. Milk also helps your kid have a more relaxed and peaceful sleep.
Pepper is a wonder spice. There are a few simple pepper based remedies you can try making at home for your kid. You could boil some jaggery powder, cumin seeds, and pepper in water and then feed it to your baby. This should clear up the system quite fast. Soup with pepper helps warm up your baby’s body as well as clear up the throat and nasal passage. Another thing to try is a spoon of ghee with a pinch of pepper. This is incredibly tasty and helps fight off colds and coughs in one shot.
These home remedies are easy to make and the great thing is that there are many variations. If you don’t have one ingredient at home, there are 10 more you could use to substitute. It also gives you a lot of room for adjustment to make it tasty for your kid, otherwise they may not consume it. If the illness persists, definitely go to the doctor, but until then, there is no point in making your baby consume extra chemicals.
