In this day and age, we are so dependent on our refrigerator that any visible food item is just chucked into it and forgotten about until it is used again. But it is important to take note that cold temperature doesn’t always mean freshness at least for certain foods and here are a few foods that you should reconsider before you keep them in the refrigerator.
The second you bring tomatoes home, the first thing you probably do is either wrap them tightly in a cover or put them in a plastic box and place them in the refrigerator. I mean it makes sense, right? The colder the tomatoes are, the crispier and fresher they’ll stay. But this isn’t exactly true. Few studies show that tomatoes that are refrigerated tend to lose their texture and taste over time especially if they are unripe, then placing them at a room temperature is the best option.
You might be storing onions at room temperature without even realizing why. It’s just what your mother did and now you do it. But do you know why? Onions tend to go mushy and lose that firmness that makes them what they are. And nobody wants to add a soft, squished onion to their dishes. But if you do peel the outer layer off, then store them in the refrigerator.
Melons including watermelon and muskmelon, when placed in cold temperatures, will result in a change in their antioxidants levels because of the chilling effect on the nutritional values. Store them in a rack which is placed at an optimum place in your kitchen where there’s no direct sunlight.
Contrary to popular belief, storing bread in the refrigerator doesn’t mean that it’ll retain its freshness. But it actually makes the texture hard, which means it’ll be difficult to chew. It also makes the bread stale. So the best option is to store it in an airtight container and to keep an eye on the expiry date.
If you think about it, there’s no reason to store honey in the refrigerator because it doesn’t get spoiled after few days. In fact, honey will get crystallized and will become inedible if it is kept in the fridge for a long time.
Garlic needs to be placed in a dry and well-ventilated area. If they are placed in a cold and wet environment, something like a refrigerator then there are chances of it sprouting and even going rubbery. This means that they become unsuitable to be consumed over time.
Potatoes are full of starch and when they are placed at a cold temperature, there are chances of this starch turning into sugar. When these potatoes are added to the pan, they change into a not-so-appetizing colour. Store them in an airy muslin cloth or a net with lots of holes for the air to pass through.
