When it comes to the well-being of a baby, taking chances or being careless is the last thing any parent would ever do. Babies whose immune system is still developing are more prone to infections and health problems. At times, the health problems can be triggered by unhealthy and unhygienic baby care habits and practices.

Thus, with a baby around, emphasis should be given to cleanliness. For parents, who are not quite aware of the baby hygiene, here are a few vital tips on baby hygiene, which, if practised diligently can go a long way to keep your bundle of joy healthy and disease free.

If your baby has already started crawling, care should be taken to keep the floors clean and well sanitized and with phenyl and similar disinfectants. Babies also have a habit of putting every object (be it toys, clothes, utensils,) they get hold of into their mouth. Thus, the toys and clothes should be kept clean and well sanitized.

The baby is always an apple of the eye. Thus, welcoming the baby into this world is synonymous with endless visits of loved ones and well-wishers. While the guests are all cordially welcomed, you should ensure that they wash their hands properly before entering the baby's room or touching the baby. It is also a healthy practice to keep the shoes outside before entering the room for obvious reasons.

While we have stressed upon the healthy hygienic practices that every guest visiting the baby needs to follow, the rule applies to the family members as well. We know every family member, be it, parents, siblings or grandparents want to spend maximum time with the baby holding them, cradling them, feeding them or playing with the little munchkin. But the fun and frolic should not be at the cost of the baby's health. Make it a habit to change the outside clothes (such as school/college uniforms, office dress), wash your hands and the feet and then spend as much time as you want with the baby. For those feeding the baby make sure to wash your hands as well as the spoon and the bowl before you feed the baby.

Leftover milk (especially in a feeding bottle) often serves as a thriving ground for the bacteria, exposing the baby to a host of infections. Thus, if you are using a feeding bottle, wash and sterilize the bottle after use to negate any bacterial or microbial growth.

There is no denying the fact that a pacifier goes a long way to soothe a baby along with minimizing the risk of a sudden infant death syndrome. Yet, it is a safe practice to change the pacifier once in every 3-4 months.

Don't keep the baby in a wet or soiled diaper or wet clothes for too long. Change the diaper in every 3-4 hours to keep the baby dry, happy, and most importantly, disease free.

You can use warm water and a clean and soft cloth or cotton to clean the genital area of the baby. Soap, if at all used, should be as per the doctor recommendations.
