6 Ways To Handle Postpartum Anxiety
Child birth is a very tough job and the experience itself leaves you with tremendous amounts of strain and pain, both physically and mentally. However, sometimes these strains might increase a bit and lead to a temporary illness. One such ailment is called 'postpartum anxiety'. It is defined as a type of mood disorder associated with childbirth, and can affect both the mother and father. During this temporary period, the mother feels overwhelmed with the surge in responsibility she has gained and starts questioning her ability to be a good mother and even starts questioning her very decision to become a mother in the first place.
The symptoms for postpartum anxiety include panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and common anxiety. Although it seems like a big illness, it is generally temporary and goes within 3-4 months of delivery. Yet, there are ways to deal with the anxiety and mentioned below are 6 such ways.
1. Recognizing the problem
Like all types of psychological illnesses, people often tend to term it to some minute issue and don’t pay much heed. Thus, the first step is to recognise the fact that you have anxiety and accept it.
2. Talk to family/friends
The next step is to start dealing with the anxiety and for that, the best way is to talk to your husband, family and friends. Accept their help in getting you through the period.
3. Take care of your health
During pregnancy, the body goes under tremendous changes and thus, it is important to take care of your health and body after the baby is born by getting sufficient sleep, exercising and eating proper meals.
4. Stop trusting all the happy social media pictures
As everyone has found out, not everything that is said or posted on social media is true and thus, cannot be taken at face value. Almost every other mom faces the same type of issues as you do and yet they post only the happy memories and not the hardships. So, stop thinking that you are the only person who cannot cope.
5. Start writing a journal
Sometimes, we are not able to share our true feelings with those closest to us. This leads to those feelings being buried within us and building up. Everyone needs a place to express their emotions and writing what you feel will help you release those emotions and feel relieved.
6. Start enjoying life
Yes, your responsibilities have increased, but still, it is not a sin to enjoy your life the way you want to. Being a mother is an amazing responsibility and someone has aptly said that “All work is easy if you start enjoying what you do”. Thus, enjoy everything you are doing and still find some 'me time' where you can do whatever you want to.
Giving new life to someone is an honour reserved for the best of people and yet, it comes with its challenges. However, if you take care of yourself to the best of your abilities, everything else will fall into place eventually. Psychological illnesses are not something to be afraid of or looked down upon. Every illness can be dealt with if the right methods are followed and yet, one must not shy away to take medical help as and when necessary.
