6 ways to beat the postpartum summer heat

The postpartum phase is the period between the day after the delivery to the day your body has nearly returned to its pre-pregnant state. This involves the mum progressing through many changes, both emotionally and physically, while learning how to deal with all the changes and adjustments required with becoming a new mother. It usually lasts 6-8 weeks

You'll need to take good care of yourself to rebuild your strength. Lots of rest, good nutrition, and assistance during the first few weeks. All of this might sound overwhelming, and even more so, with the weather not in your favour but we've got some tips for easing the process a bit:

Sleep Well

Resist the urge to stay up later during long summer days. Instead, pay attention to good sleep hygiene by sticking to a bedtime schedule and forming a routine. This might be difficult with the baby waking you up in the middle of the night but you'll get used to it. Although maximum rest is recommended, it's a good idea to avoid naps during the day unless you take them every day at the same time, for the same amount of time.

Your Skin

Resist the urge to itch and damage your belly skin, you might end up with an even worse rash. Itching is common after delivery and high humidity levels add to the discomfort, it is advisable to use anti-itch creams for relief.

Dress accordingly

Don't wear the maternity clothes now that the baby is here, that phase is over. If you're going to be indoors, dress in loose-fitting, lightweight garments, preferably made from cotton, which absorbs perspiration better than synthetic fabrics and is kinder on the skin. For the outdoors, prefer light-coloured long pants and a long-sleeved top, however, it is recommended to keep your outdoor activity minimal, especially during the summer.

Take cold showers

What better way to beat the summer heat and the sore muscles than a cold shower, you'll be jolted back to life ready to face the day the moment you step out of the shower. Also, cold showers are essential because they protect the skin from acne breakouts, which are common in heat and humidity. The first shower after childbirth is incredible, many mothers say.

Get Outside

Pick one outdoor activity like taking a nature walk, doing yoga with your husband or in-laws under the early morning sun just for a few minutes when the baby's asleep to refresh yourself, you might end up burning some calories too. And remember, the family that plays together not only gets fit together, it's also a great way to create bonding time.

Give Your Diet a Fruity Boost

If you do one thing this summer to improve your diet, have a cup of mixed fresh fruits, strawberries, oranges and plums every day. They'll help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of age-related illnesses. Oranges and strawberries are especially antioxidant-rich. Some fruits are also tops in fibre, which helps keep cholesterol low and may even help prevent some cancers.
