Parenting is not something you just know or can learn before even having a child. It takes experience and a lot of time to adapt to your new role and be ready to take care of your little one properly. As such, there are various things that you just should not do before a certain amount of time. A new human being has just come to life after spending 9 months in a dark liquid filled containment. It will take some time for them to absorb it all in. The first week of a child’s life is highly critical and is a time when the young one needs to be protected from any and all situations which might affect them in a negative way. But we understand that it is not possible for you to know what to do and what not to do especially if you are a first-time mother. So, to help you out, we have made a list of 6 such things that you just should NOT do in your baby’s first week.
1. Have a lot of people around them
Yes, the birth of a baby is a highly celebratory affair and it is obvious that a lot of people will want to come over and meet your little one. But, every person carries with them, their own set of germs and under no circumstances whatsoever should these germs be allowed near your little one. Besides, the first few days need to be more of a bonding time with just mommy and daddy. So, try keeping the not so close relatives and friends away for at least the first week.
2. Kiss them too much
Yes, we know you just love and adore your little baby and it is difficult to resist the urge to just keep kissing them day and night. But, it is important that you have some control over your urges. A newborn’s immune system is not as developed as that of an adult human. And the germs that do not affect you can severely harm your baby. By kissing your little one you are only giving these germs a direct path to get on to your child. Hence, till their immune system develops a little, you need to make sure that you put yours and everyone else's lips on a tight leash.
3. Give them a bath
Your doctor will probably tell you this but this one thing is so important that even we have to emphasize it. Yes, you might think that not giving a bath to your little one for a week or two is gross or just dirty, but we assure you, it is all for their sake. If you do feel that your little one has gotten dirty (which is unlikely since they don’t exactly do anything or even sweat) then clean them gently with a sponge while making sure that you do not wet the residual umbilical cord. Do not submerge your newborn in water for at least the first month.
4. Take your baby outside
This too is something that your doctor might or might not tell you but we need to emphasize it anyway. Your little one has just come into the world and by taking them outside in their first week itself, you can risk them catching some infection or get affected by too much light. Remember, the outdoors are not something you can control the indoors. So, apart from the doctor checkup, try not going out or taking your little one out for at least the first week.
5. Waking up the baby
Yes, your baby needs to feed almost every 2-4 hours daily and yes you have to be there to breastfeed them. But, this does not mean that you wake them up and then feed them. If your baby is sleeping then let them sleep. It is an important part of their development and adapting the new world. Whenever your little one will feel hungry they will let you know. And apart from breastfeeding also, for any other reason, it is best and recommended to not wake up your little one when they are sleeping. It will only make them cranky.
6. Letting them sleep on their stomach
This is one dangerous thing that you need to take care of. Research and long experiences have seen that sleeping on the stomach can increase the chances of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS). Besides, the baby is not yet developed to take on the weight of their own head. And so, they might have trouble breathing if they sleep on their stomach. Yes, we understand you want to sleep in the position they prefer so that they can have longer sleeps but this is one thing you just should not risk.
