6 Super Foods Every Breastfeeding Mother MUST Consume

Breastmilk is the best and the most important meal of a baby. Most of the important nutrition and immunity that a newborn gets is from the mother’s milk and thus it is important that during the breastfeeding period, the mother takes care of her diet. Research has found that whatever a mother eats affects the breast milk and thereby the baby and hence the mother’s nutrition is key to keeping the newborn healthy. And as such, we have made a list of some super foods that every breastfeeding mother must have.

1. Garlic

Garlic is one of the best herbs you can get to increase your milk supply. It has many natural properties and uses for the postpartum woman and should be used generously. It is also known to maintain heat in the body, support digestion and lactation. And is grounding, helps increase immunity and is healing for joints.

2. Ginger

It increases immunity; has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties; and has a warming quality that warms energy channels and stops uterine bleeding. New mothers are often served plenty of ginger in their meals during the first month after giving birth. Ginger is great for dispelling stomach gas and reducing bloating. It is also known to help improve breastmilk by improving the blood flow to the breasts.

3. Ghee

Ghee has been recommended to new mothers since times immemorial. Ghee stimulates the secretion of gastric acid, thus aiding in better digestion which is very important for breastfeeding mothers. It also increases vitamin absorbency and helps in weight loss. The fats in ghee aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and minerals from other foods thereby strengthening the immune system.

4. Pomegranate

Pomegranate has been seen to increase the breast milk supply in women. It is a nutrient dense, antioxidant-rich fruit that has been revered as a symbol of health, fertility, and eternal life. It also is a great blood purifier which is the one major quality it has been known for.

5. Dalia

This is one of the most prominent food item used in India that is a breast milk enhancer. You can either cook it till it becomes tender and then eat it or you can put in directly into milk and consume it that way. You can also put various fruits into the milk oats (Dalia) and consume it to get a different and better taste.

6. Methi

Fenugreek or Methi is the oldest herbal remedy for increasing breast milk. A regular kitchen herb, the seeds and leaves both can be used generously in the diet of a breastfeeding mother. It is an excellent galactagogue ie., a herb that improves breast milk secretion. Methi also has several medicinal qualities and can be used to treat fever, joint pains, intestinal and respiratory ailments.
