Babies are the most adorable, cute and beautiful humans in the world. Just by seeing a baby, a smile can come on your face. But older babies are still able to give reactions to you and whatever you do. Newborns, however, are not able to react and most of the times their eyes are closed. Yet, you can sometimes see that cute little smile on their face. These newborn babies are the ones we would like to tell you a bit more about. Mentioned below are 6 such things about newborns you might or might not have known.
1. Babies cry because that’s how they communicate
Nobody learns how to speak inside the womb itself. It takes some time for babies to get control over their vocal chords and be able to speak words. So, in order to get your attention and communicate with you, the only way left for them is to start crying. Next time your little one cries don’t just try to make them quiet. But instead, understand what’s troubling them.
2. They might look a bit weird at first
Your little one’s head may be unusual due to their journey through the birth canal, and s/he might have fine hair all over the body which is called lanugo. They could also be puffy-faced and have eyes that are often shut. But worry not as soon enough their body will adjust to the surroundings and they will become that cute little baby you had always imagined and wanted them to be.
3. They will often have dry skin
If you yourself were in a sac filled with liquids for nine months straight and then suddenly got out of it one day then you too would have a rather dry skin. Although they might have that soft and silky skin initially, it will soon get dry. This is a normal process and as such does not require any intervention from you. If you still want to keep them moisturized then you can use a hypoallergenic baby moisturiser.
4. Try to keep the umbilical cord as dry as possible
You must have noticed that a part of the umbilical cord is generally attached to the newborn. But don’t worry, it will come off on its own after some days. If the residual cord is kept dry then it is likely to fall off within 2 weeks. And given the fact that the newborns don’t get dirty often, you can maybe give them a sponge bath. If by any chance the cord does get wet then just dry it with a cloth or a swab.
5. Don’t stay holed up at home but also take precautions
There is no need for you and your little one to just stay in the house all day every day. Live your normal life and go out as and when you need to. Just take some simple precautions so that you are able to keep your little one safe. Try avoiding crowded places, don’t let too many people touch your baby on the skin and keep the baby out of the sun in order to prevent making them restless.
6. They sleep a lot but in shorter durations
A newborn baby needs feeding every 2-3 hours and so they will wake up every 3 hours for food and then they will most likely sleep off again. And so, you will almost definitely not get much sleep throughout the night or even the day. But don’t worry. As they grow up, they will develop a proper sleeping routine and you will be able to get your sleep.
