5 Ways To Take Care Of Your Child During Sudden Weather Changes
With a change in weather comes a change in your immunity. Weather change can result in a full blown adult sneeze as soon as the clouds turn grey. Considering this, you can only imagine how vulnerable that makes children and babies in particular in such a scenario. When the weather changes, our bodies need a buffer period to adjust to the new climate, making you more susceptible than usual to viral and bacterial infections and pollen-related allergies.
Hence, following certain protocol to fight through these sudden weather changes can help protect your child from falling sick.
1. Be on the lookout for symptoms
It's always easier to treat a child when you catch the early symptoms. Look out for irritability, or if he/she is unusually quiet or restless. Check their skin for extreme dryness or if it's begun looking pale. If these symptoms persist for more than two days, take your child to the clinic and if he/she is too small, breastfeeding should help immunize and replenish any loss of water due to dehydration.
2. Dress them according to the weather
As a parent, you should already be prepared for anything unpredictable. Taking extra jackets, incase it gets cold, or carrying socks, caps and mittens when you sense a chill, is something you probably already do. On the other hand, when summer is setting in, you should also keep in mind to dress your child in breathable cotton and carry caps and umbrellas to combat the heat.
3. Pay attention to your child's nutrition
The nutrition your child receives is a good way to build up their immune system. If your child has started eating solid foods, ensure he/she gets a good, balanced diet, which is rich in essential proteins, vitamins and minerals. If your child is a fussy eater, find a way to sneak in these essentials by including it in snacks and juices.
4. Proper hygiene is key
In general, good hygiene is something we all want to ensure our child follows. However, this becomes particularly important during weather changes. Ensuring they wash their hands before eating can be one way to avoid any infection he/she could get via these mediums. Kids become particularly susceptible to illness when around children who already have an infection. So, if your creche or playschool has a policy of sending children home when they detect a fever, it could be better for other children and even the child who is ill.
5. Follow a precautionary bathing routine
When your child is done with their bath, ensure he/she enters a room with approximately the same temperature as the bath. Switch off any fans before you take him/her to the room to dry and dress him/her up. Ensure you dry their hair thoroughly and dress them accordingly to keep your child warm and comfortable.
