It is important to note that breast cancer accounts for almost 30% of cancers that women suffer from. In most cases, it comes out of nowhere and is very difficult to be completely cured unless it’s in the early stages. There is no sure way to prevent breast cancer but there are a few things you can do to reduce your chances. Here are 5 of them.
1. Keep a check on your weight
Women are at an increased risk of breast cancer if they are overweight or obese. Especially after menopause, not maintaining a healthy weight can result in a lot of complications, breast cancer being one of them.
You don’t have to go through rigorous diet and exercise regimes to lose weight immediately, in fact, this is not recommended. Start slowly by maybe losing half a kg in a week until you hit the ideal goal.
2. Be physically active
Yoga, Walking, Jogging or gyming - Whatever is right up your alley, go for it. This is one of the ways to maintain an optimum weight thereby reducing the chances of breast cancer. A minimum of 30-minutes of being physically active in a day will do a lot of good to your health.
A recent study found that women who spend 6 hours or more sitting in a day have 10% greater risk of breast cancer when compared to women who sat less than 3 hours a day.
3. Nutritious diet
You might’ve heard this a thousand times before but that’s because having a proper diet which is inclusive of all the required nutrients and minerals will solve half of your health problems. Fresh fruits and vegetables will leave your tummy filled and your body thanking you!
You should also make sure that you have at least 8-10 glasses of water every day.
4. Avoid Alcohol and Smoking
Alcohol and smoking are bad for every possible bodily function and breast cancer is no different. Consuming more than 2 to 4 glasses of alcohol in a day is known to increase the risk of breast cancer. Especially if you have a history of cancer in your family then it’s best you limit your alcohol intake.
Research shows that breastfeeding will reduce the chances of breast cancer especially if it’s done for long periods of time like a year or more than that. The longer you breastfeed, the greater is the protective shield.
These are a few things you can do on an everyday basis to reduce the risk of breast cancer but also keep track of your family history and if cancer is a common thing, go for regular check up and consult your doctor about what you can do to prevent it. After all, prevention is better than cure.
