Do you find yourself worrying that your baby has or might develop a hearing problem? What is considered out of the ordinary? Hearing loss can be different for different babies so there’s no one sure shot way of determining it. But here are a few things that might indicate a hearing problem in your kid.
1. Not startled
Babies are usually startled by sudden noises or loud sounds. If you notice that your baby isn’t “jumping” whenever there’s a sound in the house or remains asleep amidst commotion then it might be a sign that your child has a hearing problem.
2. Not soothed
When you sing a lullaby to get your baby to sleep or some comforting music is on, if your baby doesn’t become less agitated or fall asleep, it might indicate that he/she is not responding to the sound. But this isn’t true in all cases. Your baby might just be cranky because of lack of sleep or food.
3. Doesn’t enjoy toys that make sound
Rattles, squeaky toys, and other musical toys are something that most of the babies enjoy. If your baby’s ears are not responding like they’re supposed to, then he might consider a musical toy as one of many other toys.
4. Doesn’t try to imitate sounds
By the time your baby is 6 months old, he should be able to imitate at least a few sounds he hears from you or from his environment. Improper development of your baby’s ears can mean that they can’t perceive sounds and try and copy them.
5. Recognize familiar voices
Your baby will go quiet at the sound of familiar voices. This can happen anytime between 2 and 3 months after your baby’s birth. In case, you notice that your baby is not recognizing you or your spouse when you try to entertain the baby or when you start talking, it is an indication that there might be an issue with his/her hearing.
