5 Ways To Keep Embarrassing Moments At Bay During Pregnancy

Pregnancy definitely sounds like a tempting idea with the image of glowing skin and having a child to nurture while experiencing motherhood. However, it does come with its own share of discomforts and most of these are considered highly embarrassing in any scenario. One must remember that most pregnant women have found themselves in these situations at least once, and this should probably help you feel better about not being the only one.

1. Leaking breasts

Most women are under the impression that breasts start leaking after giving birth. However, more often than not, you’ll find your breasts leaking even before your baby is born. This can be wholly attributed to the increased level of prolactin, making your breasts and nipples extremely sensitive to any external stimuli.

What you can do is place a couple of nursing pads in your bra. This will help absorb the discharge and doesn’t let it show on the outside. However, if you notice your nipples starting to bleed, consult a doctor immediately, as it could be a bacterial infection or early signs of breast cancer.

2. Hemorrhoids

More commonly known as piles, this refers to swelling of veins in the rectum and anus area, leading to discomfort and bleeding during excretion. Although this doesn’t harm your baby, it is highly painful and itchy.

Use haemorrhoid wipes to reduce the burning sensation. You can also drink tonnes of water and consume fibre-rich foods to keep away constipation.

3. Leaking urine

Now, this one can be extremely embarrassing in social situations. During pregnancy, the pelvic muscles tend to relax, leading to the involuntary leaking of urine due to a sudden laugh or sneeze. It also happens that your baby puts extra pressure on your bladder, making it harder to control.

What you can do is visit the washroom as often as possible to ensure that no urine is collected in your bladder. You can also wear panty liners to soak the urine and reduce its odour in case the leakage is inevitable. Try a couple of Kegel exercises to strengthen your bladder.

4. Gassing

During pregnancy, your digestion process slows down. This leads to excessive burping or farting. It also gives you a very bloated feeling if you can’t digest your food fast enough.

To prevent this, it’s best to walk around as much and as often as you can. Also, ensure you avoid foods that lead to the gas formation, such as fried and fatty foods.

5. Increased discharge

You’ll notice that, especially in your third trimester of pregnancy, the discharge from your vagina will increase and along with it, so with its odour. This is a cause for embarrassment for quite a few pregnant women. It only happens because of the increased oestrogen levels in the body due to pregnancy.

It’s best to wear cotton panties, as they increase circulation around intimate areas. You can also wear panty liners or use feminine wipes to reduce the odour. Avoid using gels and soaps to wash away the odour, as this disrupts the natural chemical balance within the vagina. These discharges are also just a natural way of preventing infections.
