If you’re worried that your child might develop a weak eyesight and that glasses might become more of a permanent solution than a temporary one, then we have news for you. There are a few things you can do that can make your child’s eyes less prone to weakness.
Here are a few simple yet effective ways to improve your child’s eyesight.
There are a few simple exercises one could do to improve vision. Your child could start by rolling her eyes (like she usually does when you offer advice). She has to do it both clockwise and anticlockwise direction.
Fluttering the eyelids by blinking about 20 to 30 times can increase lubrication especially if your child has been looking at the computer or the TV for long periods of time.
You can also get them to focus by shifting their eyes quickly between objects of different distances. Have your child hold up a finger or a pencil and stand at approximately ten feet away from a wall. Let them focus on the pencil and then on any item on the wall and then back to the pencil. Repeat this for atleast 10 times. You can also try with different distances.
You can also get your child to play memory games that involve looking at a picture and memorizing as many details about it before it disappears.
Eating the right kind of foods can go a long way when it comes to improving eyesight. Green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and kale are highly recommended since they are packed with calcium and vitamins A, B and C12.
Other vegetables like carrots, capsicums, eggs and nuts like almonds and cashews are also known to boost eyesight. You can incorporate them into your child’s daily diet by making salads or juices.
Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids which are beneficial for the retina. So, try feeding fish more often by making a simply pan-fry dish or a curry according to your child’s taste.
3. Go outdoors
If your child is home, then he is either watching television or playing games on a smartphone or computer. These activities only strain his eyes further and will not help a bit in improving the eyesight. Take your child out for a walk everyday. The natural light and the greenery will do wonders for his eyes and will decrease the chances of being nearsighted.
4. Take off the glasses
If your kid has prescription glasses, then encourage them to take them off at least for a few minutes every day. Your eye muscles will feel more relaxed when the glasses are off because you do not have to stare at the center of the glasses by keeping your eyes in a fixed position.
Your child can do this when she is at home while doing small things like brushing or eating and only is she feels comfortable can even go outside for a walk.
Even if your child doesn’t complain of weak sight, it is essential that you take him/her to regular vision screenings or eye check-ups. Nowadays they are compulsory eye check-up camps that are held in most schools.
If your child already has prescribed glasses, you can still do all the above methods to improve or at the very least maintain the vision. Be sure to get his/her eyes checked up once in every 6 months.
