5 Ways To Ensure Your Child Has Healthy Sleeping Habits (4-6 years)

Sleep has an important role in maintaining your health, more so, for your child. They need at least 10 hours of sound sleep. However, the most difficult part of parenting is getting your kid to sleep. It’s hard to deal with your energetic and possibly cranky little one when you’re exhausted and all you want to do is get some rest.

Here are a few ways you can make sure your kid fulfills his/her quota of daily sleep.

1. Bedtime Routine

Consistency is the key. Establish a routine for your child to follow every night. Make sure he/she goes to bed at the same time. It might be difficult at first, but he’ll get used to it. Before going to bed, have them brush their teeth and read a few lines from a story book or you can read to them. When you do this for a few days, the next time s/he brushes his/her teeth at night, his/her brain will signal him/her that it’s time for bed.

2. No to electronics!

Do not keep any electronic devices like smartphones, video games and tablets near your kid’s bed. The light emitted from these devices are not only damaging to your kid’s eyes, but they also interrupt their sleep pattern. Your kid will want to use them everyday and it will ultimately result in less sleep for your child.

3. Lots of physical activity

Is it taking a long time for you to put your kid to sleep because s/he’s still so bouncy and full of energy at the end of the night? The only way to make sure your kid’s energy gets used up is to get him/her into physical activities. After s/he comes home from school, take him/her to a park or get him/her to ride their bike. This will make it easier for them to fall asleep.

4. Bedroom temperature

Your child will sleep more comfortably when the bedroom is well-ventilated and the temperature is on the cooler side. But it’s important to know the difference between cool and cold, anywhere between 18 to 22 would be considered cool and this is the range to aim for. It is also essential to dress your chid in proper clothes before going to bed. Ideally, cotton PJs work the best.

5. Be an example

The best thing you can do to make your kid follow everything you preach is to be a role model yourself. Kids have a tendency to imitate things their parents do, so when you practice good sleeping habits, your kid will do so too.
