Pregnancy is indeed a great thing as it is the entire process of bringing in new life into the world. Almost all women dream of having a baby one day and so when they get pregnant, it quite literally becomes a dream come true. But even during pregnancy, it sometimes becomes important for the mom to take certain precautions during pregnancy as this is the time when their immune system is weak. Apart from all the other diseases that you might be prone to, there are certain infections that can affect your vagina. This, in turn, can create problems for childbirth and can lead to increased chances of cesarean birth. So, to help you understand and stop these infections, we have made a list.
Trichomoniasis is the most common, curable, sexually transmitted disease caused by an organism called Trichomonas Vaginalis. In pregnant women, the infection can cause early labour and result in a baby with a low birth weight. Its symptoms include itchiness and soreness of vagina and discomfort during urination. Trichomoniasis is generally treated with oral medicines that do not affect the fetus.
2. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
UTIs are caused when bacteria from the outside enter the urinary tract and cause an infection. They are particularly common in pregnant women because the growing bump can put pressure on the bladder and thereby trap the bacteria in the tract. This infection can get severe very quickly if left untreated and can even cause permanent damage to the kidneys. Its symptoms include burning or painful urination, blood-tinged or cloudy urine, lower back pain, frequent urination and nausea. Antibiotics are prescribed in order to tackle the infection and throw it out of the system completely.
3. Yeast Infection
Yeast infections are actually fungal infections caused by an overgrowth of the fungus “Candida”. Though a yeast infection cannot really cause complications during pregnancy, it can get harder to control it during this time, so it’s better to take treatment. Thick, white vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese that may smell yeasty, burning, redness, and swelling of the vagina, pain when urinating. Take antifungal creams and apply on the vagina in order to remove the infection.
Syphilis is an STD which can cause severe long-term damage if left untreated. It can also pass from mother to child during pregnancy. Syphilis can cause miscarriages, premature birth and even the death of the baby soon after birth. Symptoms of syphilis include tiredness, headaches, joint pains, fever, swollen lymph glands, weight loss and hair loss. It is treated by a rigorous course of antibiotics and it is highly recommended that you take treatment immediately if you test positive during pregnancy.
5. Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial Vaginosis or BV is one of the most common infections during pregnancy. It is the result of an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. If left untreated, it can cause complications in pregnancy. Women suffering from it are more likely to go into early labour and have a baby with a low birth weight. The symptoms include unusual vaginal discharge, a strong fish-like odour from the vagina and burning sensation when urinating. There are chances that it might go away on its own just by taking some preventive measures. But if it gets worse then your doctor will most likely prescribe you with antibiotics.
