Just as the things you eat and do during pregnancy determine the health of the baby in your womb, after birth, the things you eat still influence your baby’s well-being if you’re a breastfeeding mom. If you are blessed with keen observational skills then you may notice the differences in your baby as you make changes to your diet.

Breastfeeding moms are often advised to stay away from oranges and lemons because the acid present in them might hurt the baby’s stomach. While it is true that vitamin C from citrus fruits passes to the baby via breast milk, it is in very rare cares that the baby is affected by it. These fruits are full of nutrition and very good for you during this recovery period but if you feel like they may be harming your baby, then cut down on them and see if you notice any difference.
If you’re an avid coffee-drinker, then you can for sure expect some caffeine to be present in your breastmilk. This is not exactly bad for your baby so you don’t have to give up drinking coffee. Only if you notice that your baby has trouble sleeping or is overly restless, try and cut down on the caffeine intake.
Chocolate contains theobromine which is found in cocoa solids. If you consume large amounts of chocolate (especially dark chocolate since it contains more of theobromine), the chances of your baby being irritated and gassy increases. If you do have a sweet tooth, opt for white or milk chocolate.
Medications that you take during the first 6 months may end in your breastmilk. Usually, the medicines that you are prescribed don’t harm the baby so you won’t be asked to stop breastfeeding. In cases where the baby is irritated or colicky, you can inform your doctor and see if these symptoms are a result of the medicines you are taking.
After consuming alcohol, the levels of alcohol in your bloodstream will be highest after 30 to 60 minutes. And the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream is the same amount that is found in the breast milk. So, strictly avoid breastfeeding your baby for at least 2 to 3 hours after you consume one unit of alcohol. With regular consumption of alcohol, breast milk supply is also known to reduce.
