5 Things No one tells you about Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding might feel like the most natural thing. It’s been done since a long time and there are so many people giving you advice about it. But still, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised when you read our list of things your mom or your aunt wouldn’t have told you about breastfeeding.

1. The first time’s not milk

For the first few days after delivery, every time you nurse your baby it’s not milk that comes out of you. It’s a thick, yellowish , digestible substance called colustrum. It has all the essential antibodies, proteins required for your newborn. You will be feeding your baby with actual milk only after 2 to 5 days post-delivery.

2. Your nipples may bleed

You might find that your nipples crack and even bleed sometimes. This is not an uncommon issues. You can consult your doctor about it and you maybe advised to use an over the counter ointment or cream to soothe your nipples. You might also notice that your nipples have darkened. This is because of the hormonal changes your body is going through.

3. It aids weight loss

You burn about 500-600 calories every time you breastfeed. So breastfeeding not promotes bonding, provides your baby with required nutrition but also helps in keeping you fit and healthy.

4. It will delay your period

After 9 months of being period-free, if you’re a breastfeeding mom then you might that find that your menstrual cycle may not visit you for another two or three months. This may vary depending on the number of months you breastfeed.

5. It may hurt

Breastfeeding is not exactly comfortable especially if you’re inexperienced. If you feel pain it might be because of blocked duct or an infection. But in most cases it’s because of improper latching of your baby. You can try switching positions and see what works out the best for you.
