5 Skin Care Tips For Oily Skin

People with oily skin can have a tough time keeping their skin looking fresh all the time since the glands producing sebum (skin oil) are overactive. Due to this, the face will appear to be too greasy and/or shiny. This can also lead to a number of skin problems like acne, whiteheads, blackheads and enlarged/clogged pores. Add to it the fact that the pollution and dirt in the air can only make the skin condition worse. This is why you need to take a little extra care with oily skin. Using harsh products will only increase the oil production and we don’t want that.

Fact: People with oily skin tend to have fewer wrinkles and other signs of wrinkles. This is because the extra oil helps to seal in the moisture and protects the outer layer of the skin.

1. Cleanse twice every day

One thing you should do in order to maintain the health of your skin is to ensure that you cleanse your skin twice or even thrice a day. Use a good gel-based cleanser for this. A foam based cleanser would also work well. Avoid using any harsh soaps on your face as will dry out your skin meaning that your skin is going to work extra hard to fix this and this will lead to more oil on your skin. If you apply makeup in the morning, you will have to use some makeup wipes to remove the makeup before you use the cleanser. Don’t have makeup wipes? Just spritz on a bit of coconut oil on tissue paper and wipe that makeup away.

2. Moisturise your skin

Right after you have cleansed your face, make it a point to use a moisturiser. You should ideally use it within 5 minutes of washing your face. Use a generous amount while moisturising and pat it so that it goes into your skin. Ask your dermatologist for a moisturiser that works well for your skin type. You may feel like you don’t need to use it because your skin is already so oily but the moisture from the cream will limit the amount of sebum produced by the skin since the skin is already moisturised.

3. Scrub away the dead skin

It is important to get rid of the dead skin cells from your skin on a regular basis. Oily skin people tend to have open pores on their skin and this will attract the dust and pollutants to settle into the skin along with the oil. Also, we shed dead skin every second and this will also get clogged in the pores and we know what all of this leads to - pimples! Consider using a soft gentle facial brush to gently scrub your face every day. This can be done along with your regular nighttime cleansing. It will also help get rid of any remaining makeup from your skin. Make sure to slather on enough moisturiser after this as your skin can get dry.

4. Use a weekly face mask

One thing you should include in your skincare regimen is a face mask. You can use this once every week to help absorb the excess oil and keep the skin clear and smooth. There are plenty of face masks available that suit oily skin. Look for ones that contain Multani Mitti, Turmeric, Neem, Sandalwood, etc. If you have acne marks, make a mask out of aloe vera and some cucumber juice. Apply it on your face and wash off after 15 minutes. You could also apply honey to the acne scars and leave it on overnight. This will help fade the marks.

5. Face toner spray is your Holy Grail

Toning your face will help get rid of any dirt or remaining makeup on your face. It will also help close up your pores. It is best to use this after cleansing your face, right before you moisturise your skin. If you find that your toner is actually making your skin more oily, stop using it. You can opt for either rose water as a toner or tea tree oil based toners - these are suitable for oily skin. You can spray on the toner during the day if you feel like freshening up and don’t want to use a cleanser.
