5 Reasons Why You Are Not Losing Weight On A Low-Carb Diet

If you have been on a low-carb diet and still feel like you aren’t losing weight, don’t worry - you are not alone. A lot of people find that this change in diet of reduced carbs has not helped them lose weight. But this does not necessarily mean that you have to give up on the concept of a low-carb diet entirely.

A low-carb diet would, of course, have to be combined with exercises to see the difference. But if you are not losing weight despite changing your diet and exercise regime, you may simply have to recheck your diet to see what you are doing wrong. Your nutritionist or dietician should be able to tell you exactly what you may be doing wrong.

Here are some of the possible reasons why your diet has not been working

1. Stress!

Even if you are religiously following a low-carb diet with ample amount of exercise, you will not be able to lose weight if you are stressed out. The very fact your mind is stressed could be the reason you are not losing weight. This is because of a hormone called cortisol is produced whenever you are stressed and this hormone hinders weight loss.

2. Too Much Dairy

By reducing the number of carbs you eat, you tend to reach out for heavy protein and fat rich foods - especially dairy products like cheese, ice cream and yoghurt. This is healthy as long as it is within limits. Overconsumption of dairy products can cause weight gain instead of loss. They are high in calories and thus, even with all that exercise, you are just gaining back all the calories your burn.

3. You May Need To Cut More Carbs

People who are overweight and lead a sedentary lifestyle may need to cut more carbs than others. This means that if you had cut it down to 150 gms, you would have to try going below 50 gms/day and if you were at 20 gms/day, you would have to reduce it even further. If you are a lean person who works out actively every day, you would need to consume much more than 50 gms of carbs per day to stay fit and healthy.

4. Not Getting Enough Sleep

When you don’t get enough sleep, it can affect your cortisol levels. As mentioned earlier, increased cortisol levels can lead to stress. So to avoid this, make sure you get a solid 8 hours of sleep every night. Sleeping for 5 hours or less can cause you to feel tired and restless throughout the day which could lead to unhealthy eating habits.

5. Caffeine

The right amount of caffeine helps with a low-carb diet. But consuming too much caffeine can get in the way of losing weight. This is because the caffeine gives you an energy boost by raising adrenaline levels which could result in not getting enough sleep and getting stressed out. Sleeping disorders could result in weight loss as well.
