Being women, feminine hygiene is something that we have grown to internalise as extremely important. However, it is true that most women are cleaning their nether region wrong. In fact, the vagina is known to have an inbuilt self-cleaning mechanism and using soaps and body washes down there may turn out to be a bad idea, as these disrupt the ideal pH balance of the vagina. Ideally, a warm water wash should be sufficient. However, some days, this may not suffice. Of course, there exists an entire market out there of feminine hygiene washes, but if you prefer not to subject this delicate region to further chemicals, there exist natural ingredients that could help keep your ‘hoo-ha’ clean and fresh.
1. Aloe vera gel
Aloe vera is known to have antibacterial properties in addition to its soothing effect and thus, makes for an affecting vaginal wash. Peel off fresh aloe vera gel from a plant (be sure not to use packaged aloe vera, which could contain chemicals). Mix about two tablespoons to warm water and you now have yourself an all natural wash.
In times of crisis, especially if you have an annoying yeast infection, that cup of yogurt in the refrigerator might just save you. A yeast infection causes a disruption in the balance of good bacteria. Thus, applying a source rich in this type of bacteria could help cure a yeast infection by restoring the balance down there. Applying yogurt directly to the region and washing it with warm water after an hour should help calm the infection.
3. Lemon leaves
Lemon leaves are antimicrobial, which helps maintain the pH balance of your vagina and leave it smelling fresh. Using lemon leaves as a vaginal wash is easy. Pluck a few fresh lemon leaves and boil them in water till the water turns green. Drain the liquid and allow it to cool down to a warm temperature. This mixture makes for an effective vaginal wash. Although, before using this, make sure you aren’t allergic to lemon leaves and proceed with your doctor’s approval.
4. Baking soda
By now, you must have figured that the key to a healthy, clean vagina is maintaining an ideal pH balance down there. Another ingredient that helps us achieve that is baking soda. Mix about 1 ½ teaspoons of baking soda to a mug of lukewarm water and use this as your handy vaginal wash. Baking soda, however, could dry out the region if used excessively, so make sure it’s well diluted before using it.
5. Salt water
When you have an infection, bad bacteria takes over your vagina, leaving it itchy and painful. A good solution to get rid of this feeling, as we do with most infections, is salt water. Salt water, having the ability to kill infectious bacteria, can be the best solution for you. Mix a teaspoon with lukewarm water and use this as a wash several times a day to be free of that nasty infection.
