Motherhood is a rollercoaster ride of ups and downs (mostly ups) where you’re trying to figure every single thing out. But there are a lot of people that go ‘Congratulations, you’re a mother now here’s what you need to do’. Most of this unsolicited advice is comprised of myths that you’ll believe because you’re a new mom and will literally do anything to protect your baby even if it means it’s something as bizarre as sleeping on a brick bed.
Here are a few more things that are the farthest away from being facts:
1. Always sleep when your baby is asleep
When you think about it, this is not practical at all. If you have a baby then you know that their sleeping habits as are erratic as the weather. When your baby is sleeping, you can sleep only if you like it or you can get some work done meantime or just call your girlfriends over to have a lovely chat.
2. Motherhood is a walk in the park
Motherhood is not an easy task - From taking care of your newborn to taking care of the family and yourself, it’s a tuff job. Things won’t just fall in place, there’ll be days where you’ll be frustrated and sometimes you’ll be grateful for having to experience motherhood. So hold on and you’ll realize it’s all worth it when your baby says ‘Ma’ for the first time.
3. Everybody can breastfeed, so should you
This is something that is not shown or talked about but a lot of moms struggle with breastfeeding. If you are not able to breastfeed your child, it doesn’t make you a less of a mom. It’s okay not to breastfeed, formula fed babies are just as healthy as breastfeed babies. So don’t beat yourself up too much about it. Enjoy motherhood for the lovely joy it is.
4. Your baby is the only remedy
Of Course it’s a wonderful feeling to wake up to your baby’s smiling face or even a crying face in fact but it’s important that you schedule some time apart for yourself. If you’ve had a C-section, rest is of the utmost importance. Don’t lose yourself while taking care of the baby, medications and self-care should be on your priority list too.
5. You’re on a free pass after giving birth
You would’ve taken extra care during pregnancy when it comes to food and exercising but as soon as you given birth, it doesn’t mean that you can start binge eating. Consuming the right kind of foods and working out can drastically change how fast your body heals.
