Lack of iron in the body is now a phenomenon that is becoming very popular throughout the world. Iron deficiency is known to give rise to a range of problems, the foremost among them being anemia.
Iron deficiency can cause other symptoms like tiredness, which makes it important to keep a healthy level of iron in your body, if your body is to function effectively. Iron deficiency affects the level of haemoglobin in your blood, which is responsible for the transport of water and oxygen throughout the body.
Fruits are a natural, healthy way to raise your iron levels. Some fruits are iron-rich, which means that you can eat these fruits in case you aren’t into medicinal supplements. This is important especially for vegetarians and vegans, as the body doesn’t absorb iron well from non-meat sources. So, if you’re a vegan or a vegetarian, chances are higher that you have an iron deficiency.
Here’s a list of iron-rich fruits which you can include in your diet:
Figs can be eaten fresh or fried up. The nutritional value of a dried fig is higher than that of a fresh one, though. They contain a lot of iron, and are best when they’re soaked overnight. They’re also really flexible - they can be added to corn flakes, milk and used to make ice cream, cakes and cookies.
This fruit is sweet, high in iron content, and easily available. It is also a huge source of energy and nutrition, especially it’s iron. Every 250 g of dates contains 3 mg of iron! The best part is that dates can be eaten with milk, or can be used to make a variety of dishes, like sweet chapatis, barfis and halwas.
These are a favourite among everyone! They are extremely rich in glucose and iron. They’re made with sweet, sun-dried grapes. Every half a cup of raisins contains 1.6mg of iron, and this can be easily assimilated and helps produce more blood. They can be consumed directly, or used to make a variety of dishes like curries, purees or added to milk.
Rich in nutrients like protein, carbohydrates and Vitamin A, apricots are packed with energy. Dried apricots make for a wonderful source of iron, they stay fresh for much longer and can be stored for several months. The fresh apricots, available in summers, can be consumed as juices or ice creams.
This juicy, wonderful fruit is highly beneficial for all blood-related illnesses. They can be consumed whole and fresh, and can be added to any salad. Pomegranate can also be made into a juice and can be turned into an instant drink. They are not just rich in iron, they have also been shown to help fight depression and are very tasty.
