5 Foods That Prevent Constipation

Constipation is quite common during pregnancy. A rise in the progesterone hormone during pregnancy causes the easing of your body’s muscles, and this includes your intestine, which leads to constipation. Often, the lack of fiber in your diet is one of the major reasons why you get constipated. On a regular basis, your diet must contain about 25-30 grams of fiber for the proper functioning of your bowels.

We’ve got some healthy and nutritious foods that you can eat to help prevent constipation. So let’s get to it!

1. Probiotic yogurt

Probiotic yogurt contains tons of healthy bacteria that are very healthy for your digestive system. It helps cool your system down and also eases the passing of your stool. It also helps aid the increase of smooth bowel function thereby preventing constipation.

2. Legumes

Dried beans such as pinto beans, navy beans, black beans, kidney beans, cannellini beans and other legumes like lentils and green or yellow split peas are filled with nutritious fiber. To boost the fiber in your diet, you can add legumes to your soups, pasta dishes, and salads, make dhal or curries and even cook and serve them on their own as a side dish with some chaat powder. This will help keep your bowel movements healthy.

3. Apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor away and it also keeps constipation at bay! One medium-sized apple contains about 4.4grams of fiber and is so good for your health and bowels. So continue munching on those yummy juicy apples.

4. Nuts

Nuts are a powerhouse of fiber. Pistas, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, you name it. They are nutritious and full of fiber. Also, they are high in calories and help keep you energized and healthy. But don’t have more than a half a palm full of nuts a day.

5. Grapes

Grapes are a yummy and healthy snack that contain a large amount of insoluble fiber that helps ease digestion and assists in the smooth movement of your bowels. They can be eaten as they are or in a tasty fruit salad. They are rich in fiber and super yummy, so pop in some grapes when you’re reaching out for a snack to keep constipation in check.
