5 Do's And Don’ts To Follow After Giving Birth

The period after giving birth is a stressful time for both the baby and the mom. It is important to try to do everything possible to facilitate the healing and reduce risk of infections and other such issues for the mom. Here are a couple of dos and don’ts that can help ensure this.

1. Don’t use tampons

Using tampons can cause infections. This is because it gets inserted into the wound caused while birthing that hasn’t healed as yet.

2. Do change your sanitary napkin every 4 hours

Wearing the same sanitary napkin can cause infections and may also irritate the wound, so it is a good idea to change the napkin every now and then.

3. Don’t have sex

You have to wait for the bleeding (Lochia) to stop. This is because the wound from your placenta coming out hasn’t healed yet and having sex before it is healed can increase the risk of infection.

4. Do practice good posture

Good posture is very important after birth as it helps relieve backache. It also eases the pressure on the perineum, which is the area between a woman’s anus and vulva.

5. Do sit on a pillow or a padded ring

Sitting on a pillow or a ‘donut’ (padded ring) helps reduce the friction between your perineum and your clothes. It helps heal any swelling and fissures in the area. Sitting on a pillow can also reduce pain and helps women sit comfortably.
