Breastfeeding is a challenge all in itself and if you’re a new mom, you know what we’re talking about. You’re left with sore, cracked and even painful nipples but still this won’t likely stop you from continuing to breastfeed your child. Why? Because it’s your baby’s sole source of nutrition. So, wouldn’t you want everything to do with it to be perfect? Here are a few breastfeeding habits that you might be doing unconsciously but they have very real effects on your baby.
1. Sticking to a schedule
Whether you’re a working mom or a really busy person, sticking to a breastfeeding schedule might seem like a practical and a convenient option but your baby won’t necessarily agree with it. Your baby is human like you and s/he will not be hungry at the same point in time every day. So when you stick to a schedule, you’re likely bound to leave your child hungry or force feed your child when s/he is not hungry, both of which are not recommended.
2. No Eye contact
Apart from the breastfeeding factor, breastfeeding also has a lot to do with you bonding with your baby. This interaction is very necessary for babies emotionally so when you try to keep yourself busy by staring at your mobile phones while you breastfeed, you’re losing precious quality baby-momma time. Next time you breastfeed, ditch that smartphone and stare into those big baby eyes that adore you!
3. Keeping an eye on the clock
Did you know that milk you produce during the first few minutes of breastfeeding differs from the very last breastmilk? And your baby needs both foremilk and hindmilk to fulfill their nutritional needs. So this means that you shouldn’t really breastfeed for a fixed amount of time, it must be as long as it takes to empty your breast or your child’s little tummy to get filled.
4. Taking unprescribed medication
While you are breastfeeding, it is very important to keep an eye on what you are consuming. Certain medications have side effects which may alter the composition, taste or the smell of your breastmilk. So before you opt for any medicines (ayurvedic, homeopathy or allopathy), always consult with your doctor and specify that you are breastfeeding.
