Indians are the most amazing and awesome people in the entire world. And still, it is often very easy to offend this big country of 1.1 billion people. Though there have been various things over the years that have been highly offensive to the Indians, the year 2017 saw quite an exceeding lack of tolerance. And so, we are here to tell you about the top 10 instances that hurt Indian sentiments which led to aggression at multiple levels.
The biggest controversy of 2017 was the movie Padmavati (now renamed Padmavat) directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. And this happened before the movie was even released. Indian sentiments got hurt on the fact that a historical drama was putting a bad light on the queen and showed false facts. This all happened before this mob even saw the movie or knew what was going on.
2. Firecracker ban
Global warming and air pollution have been increasing by the second and it is a proven and visible fact. As a result, it was imperative that the firecrackers be banned in NCR and Delhi to reduce smog. Still, a lot of Hindus got offended by this ban stating that it was an attack on their traditions.
3. Lisa Haydon breastfeeding pictures
All over internet people were offended by Lisa Haydon because she posted a picture of breastfeeding her child. At a time of global movements supporting breastfeeding, Indians somehow found a way to be offended by this extremely supportive perfect picture put up by Lisa. Breastfeeding is a beautiful and highly important activity that should not be taken in any bad light whatsoever.
4. The hijab flash mob
Some college students managed to offend people in the state of Kerala by performing a flash mob. Surprisingly, it was not the flash mob itself that offended the wonderful citizens but the fact that the students performed wearing hijabs. Why something like this would offend people is not exactly clear or understandable.
5. Priyanka Chopra’s dress code
Remember that picture of Priyanka Chopra’s meeting with the Prime Minister? Well, with that picture came to a controversy as well. Apparently, women are not allowed to wear a dress when they are going to meet the Prime Minister and no part of their body should be visible. People got offended by the fact that Priyanka’s legs were visible while she was sitting and talking to our great leader.
6. Ranbir Kapoor and Mahira Khan
This is one controversy that most of you will remember for sure. A picture was clicked in which actress Mahira Khan was smoking a cigarette with actor Ranbir Kapoor. As usual, people got offended by it and almost all major news channels were covering this while also having debates and discussions on it. Yes, we agree that smoking is bad for health for everyone. But, just because a particular person is doing it, you cannot criticize them and that too not on the health perspective but on the perspective of morality.
7. The ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ incident
Movies and religions have often been against each other and almost everytime, movies have managed to offend one religious community or other. Something like this happened in the Anushka Sharma starring Phillauri. The reason for this controversy was that ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ was unable to ward off the ghost of Phillauri. Well, given the fact that the entire movie was fiction, how such a specific detail can offend someone is a bit difficult to understand.
8. Sonu Nigam’s offence
A big controversy that ended in Sonu Nigam going bald is something you will remember somewhere at the back of your head. Sonu Nigam’s tweet on the ‘Azaan’ created a huge controversy and in this quarrel covered by media outlets all over the country, Sonu Nigam ended up going bald.
9. Irrfan Pathan and wife
A controversy related to one of the prominent cricketers Irrfan Pathan came to light when we posted a picture with his wife. As per the outrage, Irrfan Pathan’s wife was acting out of her religion by showing her hands in the picture. Well, probably the human race has started going backwards again after years of going forwards.
10. Katappa’s sin
Remember Katappa from the movie Bahubali? Well apparently the biggest sin committed by him was not killing the king but was a statement made by the actor nine years back. For some reason, this statement was published in 2017 and resulted in protests all over Karnataka including the boycott of the second part of the famous movie. In the end, the actor had to apologize and request people to not boycott the movie because of something like this.
